Modern Vintage Weddings

April 3, 2013

Fancy having an eclectic outdoor wedding? Well have I got the inspiration for you today! With a hearty dose of elbow grease and a firm plan of action, Lou & Stu coordinated their Sheffield Botanical Gardens wedding mostly themselves. "I'm a vintage events organiser so the vintage vibe was a natural way to go", began the bride. "We’re both big 50s & 60s fans so we tried to combine the two in terms of the fashion but we didn't want a fancy dress wedding. My dress was late 50s/early 60s in style (vintage, which I had altered to fit) and Stu’s suit was a 60s style tonic suit from Mod shop Jump the Gun in Brighton."

Colourful Columbus Wedding: Adam & Claire

Red Gallery

March 29, 2013

Adam & Claire were married at Via Vecchia Winery, Columbus - well actually they were married in the alley behind Via Vecchia Winery but they had their reception indoors afterwards! With a groom a wedding photographer himself, they put real importance on their images and so set up a pre-wedding 'first look' to capture some intimate moments before the ceremony kicked off. For this Claire wore a BHLDN dress designed by Orla Kiely, She changed back into this outfit for the reception but for the ceremony itself she opted to wear her mother's vintage wedding dress. Adam had no idea she was planning to do this or to even get changed at all, so seeing her walking down the aisle in a different dress than he expected must have been a very special moment indeed.

March 19, 2013

"Asian weddings are notorious for being huge, but we didn't want that", the bride continued. "We wanted everyone there to truly feel part of the wedding. This was going to be a party for our nearest and dearest. We set out to find a unique venue to capture both our sides, tall order! We looked everywhere: gallery spaces, sculpture gardens, castles – the lot. We were losing hope until we came across a beautiful National Trust site in Derby. It was stunning and we fell in love with it straight away. Not only could we pretty much use the whole house for our ceremony, reception, dinner and dancing but it was closed to the public and it had a history steeped in the Rajasthani era as the owner was the Viceroy to India. Perfect! I had the Indian side covered and Stu had the design and architecture by Robert Adams covered. We couldn't believe our luck."

A Big Vintage Tea Party: Alastair & Lee

March 18, 2013

I'm lucky enough to get to blog a lot of gay weddings, and whenever I do I never really like to make a big 'thing' about the fact that is it one. To me, a wedding is a wedding and love is love and whether it's a guy and a girl, two girls or two dudes getting hitched makes not a damn bit of difference. But with Lee & Alistair's wedding, I just can't help but make a point of how happy it makes me to see these two guys getting married. It's so utterly clear from these photos how much in love they are, and I'm so bloody chuffed to be able to share their story with you today.

March 15, 2013

Not wanting to do things by halves, Clare & Aslam had three weddings. The firs two were Muslim celebrations, and this one was their western wedding. Having three whole weddings to plan, the couple kept this event low key and budget friendly. They DIYed a lot and spent just £5000 on the day. "We tried to do everything second hand or hand made as I hate waste and am a big environmentalist", Clare explained. The wedding was held at Hyde Barn in the Cotswolds.

Ahh Emily & Chris' Florida nuptials is what my wedding dreams are made of. Getting ready in the Hard Rock Hotel (my spiritual home for sure) this achingly cool pair had their beautiful wedding at Ybor City Museum Garden in Tampa. Emily wore the Greenbow lace gown by BHLDN and Miu Miu shoes, while Chris kept it casual yet chic in a checked shirt and a vintage velvet jacket combo. The 1970s is an era that many might feel should be left back with the flares, disco and Woodstock hippies, but I'm am here to tell you the exact opposite. How bloody cool are these two?!

March 5, 2013

With family flying in from England, Thailand and the USA for their Scottish wedding, Bex & Santi really wanted to make their wedding something special. So they started with having a weeklong event, hosted at Crear, a farm house near Tarbert in Argyll. "We actually got married on 20th January but with our families travelling from all over we rented the house for a whole week (18th-24th) and everyone stayed there with us", Bex began. "We wanted to spend as little as possible, which ended up being about £10,000 but that did include the rental of Crear for 19 people for a whole week! I think my amazing mother needs a special mention here as she was 'head of catering' for the entire week at Crear and did all the menu planning and shopping for up to 30 people every day!"

Made You Look Studio

February 28, 2013

I know having favourites is bad... especially in my game... but, honestly, if I was held at gun point and asking to choose, I might be swayed towards Made U Look Photography. They are, without a doubt, some of the sweetest and most talented babes about. I love them endlessly and their photography fills my heart with joy. So obviously getting a submission from Christina, Alie & Marielle is a red letter day in my book. I feel like all my Christmases have come at once when I first clap eyes on stunning wedding images like this:

Sarah Gormley

February 22, 2013

This shoot, inspired by both vintage and vinyl elements was pulled together by wedding photographer Sarah Gomley. "I wanted to create a wedding shoot that would be relevant for passionate musicians on a tight wedding budget, so this vintage vinyl shoot features an array of DIY touches", she writes. "For a guest book, we used silver sharpie pens on vinyl records, framed to make hangable mementos for the happy couple. We also took small black-rimmed DVDs and printed stickers for their center to make handmade vinyl-themed table number signs. As decoration for the bride and groom, we hung 3x3 black and white photos on an all-black clothesline."

1930s Jazz Club Wedding: Rebecca & Scott

February 19, 2013

With a lifelong appreciation for classic vintage styling, a beautifully restored 1935 jazz club was clearly the perfect setting for Rebecca & Scott's Detroit wedding. "When we found Cliff Bells we knew we had to get married there", wrote the bride. "When choosing decor items, we were also careful careful to choose things that complimented the vintage vibe of the venue. We didn't want the décor to be too loud or overwhelming. My original design inspiration was the redesigned F. Scott Fitzgerald book covers by Coralie Bickford-Smith."

DIY Wedding in Victoria Baths: Fiona & Jonny

February 19, 2013

Unique wedding venues can be hard to come across in the UK, but Fiona & Jonny weren't going to take that lying down. They knew they wanted a memorable space for their union and so selected Victoria Baths in Manchester. "Victoria Baths is an Edwardian swimming baths (which is no longer used as baths, now a restoration project and arts/community venue)", wrote Fiona. "It was originally three big pools. Two of them remain and are empty – we got married in the deep end of the biggest one and had our reception on top of the other! It was boarded over with a sprung dance floor in the fifties (my granddad used to teach ballroom dancing in that room). The remaining smaller pool and the rest of building, which is pretty vast, was left for people to wander around and explore."

Glamorous Gothic Wedding: Lauren & Justin

The Markows

February 8, 2013

The New Jersey wedding of Lauren & Justin took place in October and had a vintage gothic theme. Red, black and white were the colours of choice and everything, although mostly handmade by the bride and her mother, had a really elegant twist. "My mother and I planned this entire wedding ourselves" wrote Lauren. "We had help here and there from my father, husband and even my mother in law. I think I should also mention I work six days a week so all planning was crammed into my only day off.. Sundays... and the little bit of time after work if I had energy!"

February 6, 2013

Red flowing locks, a faux fur coat, deep red flowers in her hair... as soon as I spied the beautiful Lauren on photographer Emma Case's blog I knew she was definitely a Rock n Roll bride. And then I saw the entire wedding and I literally couldn't wait to get it up on these pages - as soon as possible! Lee & Lauren were married in November at Stoke Newington Town Hall. They has their reception at The Artisan of Clerkenwell, a pub/restaurant in North East London. They did things their own way. They picked a non-traditional venue, they homemade as much as possible and only invited people that they really wanted to be there. This wedding was every bit the modern fairytale.

Reclaimed & Revisited DIY Wedding: Josh & Scott

Adam Lowe

February 5, 2013

Before I even saw these photographs I knew I wanted to blog this wedding. Wedding photographer, Adam Lowe, described the event to me as 'a mega super awesome gay punk dude wedding' and I instantly knew it would be amazing... and oh boy how right I was! Josh & Scott were married in October at 400 West Rich, a 100,000 sq foot warehouse in Columbus, Ohio. They did pretty much everything themselves and spent just $3000 making their wedding perfect. "We met through a gay social networking and just got to talking", they began. "About three months later we were taking turns visiting each other and three months after that Josh moved to Columbus. Josh is a huge Disney fan and we planned a trip to Disney and Scotty ordered an engagement ring. He proposed to Josh in front of Cinderella's Castle."
