Low Key Wedding at Oxford University

They met whilst both studying at Oxford University, so when Xandra and Steve got married that's where they wanted to do it. "We met at the Oxford University Mountaineering Club during our undergraduate studies," said the bride. "We had just moved to Edinburgh, so our initial plan was to have the celebrations there. Because we were not too familiar with the city, we found ourselves looking at wedding-packaged things, which felt too traditional. We eventually decided on Exeter College as a venue because it is a special place for both of us. From there, every detail had to feel awesome; I wanted every penny to support a business that I truly believed in and loved."

Although they got married on Halloween, Charlie and Chris decided they wanted their wedding to have a different feel to most themed Halloween weddings. With the groom's father being from South America, a Day of the Dead theme made way more sense. "Chris’ dad is South American and he’s always loved day of the dead", explained the bride. "We both absolutely love autumn with all its vibrant copper tones and Halloween is our favourite holiday. We always celebrate it in a big way so it was an obvious choice for our wedding. We also wanted the whole thing to reflect my heritage too so the Asian influence throughout our venue, The Matara Centre, was really important."

OK, so Lewis and Cassie's wedding wasn't actually held at Hogwarts, but there ceremony venue, Manchester Town Hall, does have a striking resemblance! "Two words describe our wedding entirely: Harry Potter!" said the bride. "We got engaged at the Diagon Alley section at Universal Studios Florida and have always loved the Harry Potter films and books. It made sense to us to have a Harry Potter themed wedding and to take pretty much all of the inspiration for our day from the films. We wanted it to look quirky and classy but not like an 8-year-old’s birthday party which can sometimes be a challenge when you have a theme, especially something like Harry Potter!"

Helen and Rich are hooked on the TV series, Peaky Blinders, so when they came to plan their Manchester wedding, they based it on their favourite show. "It was only natural that we decided to join the Brummy gang for our wedding day", Helen explained. "Also, Rich's father grew up not that far from the real Peaky Blinders gang, he has Irish heritage, and I have always been obsessed by the 1920s. It just made sense."

Laura and Simon wanted a wedding that felt like them. They didn't pick one particular theme. "We didn't really have a set ‘theme’," explained the bride. "With so many fantastic sources of inspiration we simply couldn't decide and commit to one thing. At the beginning, we felt overwhelmed, but soon realised that we needed to focus less on the best bits of other people’s weddings, and more on what we actually wanted for our own. It was important that whatever we chose reflected our relationship, interests and personalities and this is exactly what helped us to bring it all together."

Alex and Maddy had different ideas about what their wedding should be like, but luckily they learned to compromise! "When we first started discussing the type of wedding we wanted, we realised we were on opposite ends of the spectrum", explained the bride. "Alex would have been more than happy with a simple registry office with minimal guests whereas I wanted something where we could celebrate with all of our friends and family, where I could feel a bit like a princess for the day! In the end we agreed on a rustic woodland theme and kept to a relatively small budget considering the size of our guest list. We had 105 people (big families!)."
