Guest Contributor

September 17, 2020

It’s 2020 and thinking that makeup is “just for girls” is about as old fashioned as racing to blockbuster for 11pm on a Sunday to return your VHS tapes. But, if you identify as a man or non-binary, where can you go for the best advice? YouTube is obviously a great resource and there are plenty of influencers of all gender identities rocking the most incredible looks, but for your wedding day you may want something a bit more subtle. Plus, doing a face that looks great in a highly edited selfie is very different to creating a look that lasts all day. Makeup artist Natalie Flewitt has been working with male and non-binary clients for years, and today she’s sharing some of her top tips.

Fiona and Allana wanted their summer 2019 wedding to reflect their personalities and their love story. They met at primary school (although were in different years so they didn't really know each other) and reconnected when they both started working at the same place. Although neither of them were out at the time, they instantly clicked, knowing what they were feeling for each other was more than just friendship.

This April wedding was a strong female-led affair with both brides being walked down the aisle by their mothers and the cake and flowers being made by Carleigh's. She even surprised them by putting pictures of some of their favourite people on the bouquets - those that had either passed away and were unable to attend their special day. "Carleigh’s bouquet had a photo of her dad, and Sara’s bouquet had a photo of her grandmothers who raised her", they explained.

It's 2020 and so planning an LGBTQ wedding shouldn't be any different to planning a straight one. While there have been HUGE, incredible strides made all over the world in the last few years, parts of the wedding industry are still (STILL!) outdated a hetro-normative as fuck. Hayley of Wedding Business School has recently set up a FREE online course for wedding suppliers to help educate and improve the lack of inclusivity and diversity she's personally experienced. Today she's sharing some practical tips and advice on how you can best navigate your wedding planning when you are an LGBTQ couple, too. Hayley, we love you! Over to you...

Ben and Matt had a very specific vision for their November 2019 wedding; “We love Francisco de Zurbaran’s baroque still life paintings,” said Matt, “these inspired our table decorations. We were also inspired by fashion designer Molly Goddard who recreated an art class for her A/W 2015 presentation. We wanted the tables to feel a bit like an art installation and our guests to feel like they were part of the piece.”

Imagine what your wedding could be like if you had no-one else but yourselves to please. If you could wear what you wanted, invite who you wanted and spend the day exactly as you liked, no questions asked. This doesn't have to be a fantasy and although these images are from a photo shoot rather than a real ceremony, I think they're going to inspire you to look to yourselves for your wedding concept and ideas, rather than getting lost in a world of Pinterest boards and Facebook groups!

As we kick of 2020, I'm not sure I can think of a more perfect feature than this roaring 1920s themed vow renewal! And OMG is she a beauty! We feature quite a few vow renewals, but not often those of LGBTQ couples, so I was super excited to hear all about Kaitlin and Stephanie's love story. The day began life as a styled shoot, but they decided to renew their vows for real. They were married in Paris originally so wanted nods to this throughout too.

Ahh Lily and Claribell's wedding brings us so much joy!! They were married at My Moon Restaurant in Brooklyn and although they had just $5000 to spend their day was beautiful and so right for them! The theme was a combination of keeping things simple and intimate but with rustic and romantic touches. They wanted to celebrate their day with their closest loved ones and avoid anything to formal or fancy.
