Pastel Goth Unicorn Wedding for $1500!

Phoebe Hofsteede

January 1, 2018

I was trying to figure out how to best start 2018 with a BANG, wondering what would be the perfect post that would start as we mean to go on for the year ahead... And then I laid eyes on Suzi and Ivan's fantasy, fairytale and UNICORN THEMED WEDDING and the decision was basically made for me. This has to be one of the coolest weddings I've seen in a long time! They got tattoos, the bride wore a floral purple dress and they even a real life unicorn for goodness sake. Oh and very the best part? The whole wedding only cost $1500 (AUD). Truly incredible.

Anna and Johannes

December 18, 2017

At first glance, this is a gorgeous wedding full of all the details that Rock n Roll Bride readers go nuts for. But this is actually a styled shoot! And it has a beautiful story behind it... Vanessa ('Vanny') and Martin are very close friends of photographers Anna and Johannes. When they were all children, Anna's little sister brought her friend Vanny home from school. Vanny's father had died of cancer and her mum had a new boyfriend and so was almost never home. Vanny was mostly living off pizza and soft drinks, said Anna. "Since my family is very sociable (and crazy), we kind of adopted Vanny and so she spent a lot of time with us during those years, and we went through a lot together. Johannes and I had a styled shoot planned, and we asked Vanny and her boyfriend Martin to be the models. What they didn't tell us was that not only they were freshly engaged, but they were also expecting a baby! Our shoot then turned out to be half styled and half real wedding, with me doing a speech in church, everybody crying, and our friends playing the parts of the bridal party!"

When a couple cites the movie Up and Mexican fiesta vibes as inspirations for the feel of their wedding, you just know colour is going to be around in a big way! Louise and Ross met in their local pub one Christmas Eve, and Louise thought he looked like the musician Ben Folds. Ross pursued the romance, however Louise said, "I well and truly friend-zoned him until around a year later when I realised I loved him more than a friend."

Krystal and Nathan found the lead-up to their wedding full of difficulties, with even the morning itself being nerve-wrackingly filled with the threat of rain. However, the day turned out to be magical and full of colour, love, support and happiness. The bride said that their favourite part of the wedding was that, "We each got to marry our best friend." Which is a surefire way to melt away any woes!

Nautical & Retro Wedding in Canada

Sarah and Drew wanted their wedding to really showcase where they grew up (and hosted their wedding): Newfoundland and Labrador. Although they had been living in Alberta for a number of years, they wanted their wedding to reflect their love of the most easterly province of Canada. “We had been living in Alberta for a number of years, and wanted our wedding to reflect our East Coast roots, so we included elements that evoked the island everywhere we could, "said Sarah. “The aisle was lined with rubber boots, we used a lobster trap as a card holder and the reception tables were named after Newfoundland communities. The head table was named Heart’s Content.”

After swiping right, Laura and Marc had a laid back boho festival wedding, with a humanist ceremony, at Mansty Farm in Penkridge. "We wanted to try and make it a mini-Glastonbury festival as it's our favourite place," said the bride. "We tried to put our personal touch into everything. We wanted it to be an 'unwedding' wedding. No quirky love letters or anything that didn’t mean something to us. From the seating plan to the log fires, everything had a bit of us in it."

Are you ready for the Alice in Wonderland wedding to end all Alice in Wonderland weddings? Well buckle up baby because you're in for one hell of a psychedelic ride! Tumi and MJ wanted their wedding to be Alice in Wonderland themed, but not the Disney version. They were inspired by Lewis Carroll's original books. Almost all the elements were custom or handmade. They had a bell that rung during their Mad Hatter’s Tea Party reception to make people change seats, had a bridal bouquet treasure hunt and 'drink me' shots for everyone before they walked through the door to the ceremony!

Esther and Todd's wedding was a 1960s inspired celebration held in New Zealand. Being in nature was also important to both of them so they held their wedding at Port Waikato School Camp, an outdoor education camp established in 1928. The site had everything they needed including a big grassy square flanked by long dormitories (ample accommodation!) a dining hall, selection of cabins, and a stunning outdoor chapel where they held their ceremony.

Nina and Zakk were legally married in Sweden, where the bride is from and the groom works as a tattoo artist, but also wanted to have a celebration in the UK, where the groom grew up. Despite living in Sweden for the last few years Zakk has a lot of family and friends in the UK so having a second celebration on Zakk's parents' property made a lot of sense. The location was a sprawling, beautifully maintained stretch of land that boasts a duck pond, tree house and playground - perfect!
