Help! I’ve Fallen Out of Love with my Blog

Kat

August 6, 2013

Dear Kat, I have a massive dilemma and I really hope you can help. I've been blogging about a certain topic for the past few years and I've really loved it. I've made some great connections within the industry, built up a decent readership and I'm really proud of what I've achieved. But I have a problem... I feel like I've kinda fallen out of love with it - not of blogging, but with the topic I'm writing about.

10 Ways to Be More Popular (On Social Media)

July 30, 2013

I was never very popular at school. I had a group of four friends who I stuck pretty close to and we were delightfully nicknamed 'the bods' (our school's name for geeks/ nerds/ squares) by our much more popular peers. As a teen, popularity is such a life-defining thing. If you don't act a certain way or fit in with a particular group you're ostracised or bullied and you spend your days saying "Well who'd want to be like them anyway!?" while all the time wondering what you ever did to be so despised.

Business Bites: Ryan Gosling & New Blogger Business Advice

Kat

July 26, 2013

This week has been busy but delightful. I signed off on my two big projects (one of them will be hitting the blog on Monday - watch this very excited space!) and spent an evening with Gareth at a spa (yes, it was just as wonderful as it sounds). Then yesterday I hotfooted it to London to speak at the fabulous Papergirls Paperfest conference followed by one to many cocktails with Debs, Lucy and Abbey. Despite speaking to them all pretty much every day I haven't seen them in forever and it was just beyond magnificent to catch up in person.

Is it Ever OK to Work for Free?

Kat

July 23, 2013

When it comes to valuing your worth, something which I am a fierce advocate of, it's not just cold hard cash that can be the deciding factor. While the thought of working for free might initially seem like something that no-one in their right mind would want to do, on the contrary, doing some pro bono work can actually be a really good investment in your business. If you chose your projects and collaborations wisely and correctly use that work as part of a larger campaign or as a stepping stone to something else, it can be a hugely beneficial exercise.

When All You Want To Do Is Quit…

July 16, 2013

How do you deal with those moments/ days/ weeks when all you want to do is give up? In the past month, so much stuff has happened that it's been incredibly stressful and at times totally overwhelming. Some of it has been to do with my business. I won't go into details but it's had to involve lawyers. I'm actually really loving what I'm learning about the law, but the emotional side of things, and having to construct my own case, has been pretty stressful.

Business Bites: Powering Through

Kat

July 12, 2013

It's been one of those treadmill weeks. I feel like I've been pounding one for 8 hours a day, just trying to keep up. If only my story was more literal than metaphorical, I'd be fit as a fiddle! Weeks like this one can feel like they're sent to test us, but really, it's just all part of the ebb and flow of running your own business. Sometimes it's fun and frolics for days, and other times it's all about getting your head down, powering through and doing the very best you can.

How To Get Shit Done When You Have No Time At All

Kat

July 9, 2013

As most of you will probably know, I got back from a two week trip to The States late last Wednesday. While I love nothing more than getting away from the humdrumality (is that even a word?!) of everyday life and work, there is pretty much nothing more stressful than coming home to a to do list as long as my arm and an inbox fit to bursting. I joked on Twitter that I should write a post entitled "How to get shit done when you have no time at all" to which many of you responded saying you'd love to know the secret too. While I can't claim to be some kind of productivity wizard, as I powered through everything I had to do in the latter part of last week, I wrote down just how I did it. I hope you find it helpful and if you have any other tips I'd love to hear about them in the comments too!

Business Bites: Working Like a Machine…

Kat

July 5, 2013

My feet have not touched the ground since I got home on Wednesday night... I literally feel like an old machine cranking back up to full speed... I'll get there but it might take me a few days! I'm not going to lie though, I'm feeling quite overwhelmed and a little stressed out about everything I have on right now, but it's all good, I'm just taking each day hour at a time! Sheesh maybe I need to write a blog post titled 'How to get shit done in no time at all...'

Made U Look

June 25, 2013

People always say there are no original ideas. It's true, everything is a rehash of this or an offshoot of that. I actually did this once before but my babe Emma Case posted this Q&A blog post the other day and I really enjoyed reading it so I wanted to shamelessly rip off the idea and do it again! Thanks to everyone on Facebook and Twitter who asked a question. In fact I got so many of them that I'm going to split this into two parts and do another post same time next week. If you have any yourself, be sure to pop them in the comments and I'll try and include it as well!

Business Bites: Motivation

Kat

June 21, 2013

Over brunch in Soho yesterday morning, Gala and I started chatting about motivation. It's funny because I always figured that I was motivated by money, after all isn't that why we run our businesses? But she commented that since I'd arrived in New York, less than 24 hours previously, I'd spoken about two projects that I am currently working on. Of both I'd then gone on to say "yeah but I'm not really doing it for the money. I really enjoy it and think it will make me really stand out from the other wedding blogs..."

Three Ways to Make Your Past Clients Your Biggest Cheerleaders

June 11, 2013

I didn't grow up in America so I never really understood the whole cheerleader thing... well except what the movies told me of course. Correct me if I'm wrong but it's my assumption that they're basically squads of popular girls who dance around, wear really high ponytails (do even higher kicks) and who's main goal in life if to make the football team feel special. Putting our cultural differences aside, I can see the appeal... well, for the footballers at least. I mean who wouldn't want some gorgeous babes telling them how awesome they were every time they scored a touchdown?

Addicted to the Busy

Are you always busy? When that group email or Facebook event invite gets sent your way, are you never able to go because you have to work? Weddings are a weird industry, everyone knows that you work a lot of weekends but then it is also expected that you are contactable first thing Monday morning. If your marketing campaign has been successful and the bookings are healthy, you may well find that suddenly weeks and weeks are stretching in front of you with no proper break. Every wedding you take on has a significant amount of admin and for us photographers, there is that mountain of post production. Throw in a few double or even triple header weekends and that mountain can quickly become Everest.
