I’m slightly obsessed with gel manicures. I find nothing more annoying than nail varnish that chips the first time I wear it, so I love that gels last up to 4 weeks and without damaging your nails underneath. However getting them done professionally all the time can be really blooming expensive. After realising what a dent in my bank balance my love affair was having, I decided to see if there was a DIY option. And so I uncovered a brand new obsession.

Katie and Dan had a teeny tiny wedding (just them and their parents!) at The Summerhouse on the Millbrook Estate in Devon in December. Because they kept their guest list so small, they were able to do exactly what they wanted and to pull it all off for under £8000! Their smaller than average budget certainly didn't mean they had to compromise on the things that really wanted. Katie had a custom wedding dress made by Jo at The Couture Company and they booked the amazing Shell de Mar to shoot the day.

Don't you just love looking at weddings when the emotion completely pours out of the photographs? This is totally applicable for Ash and Pat's Brighton elopement! They wanted a low key and budget-friendly wedding and so were married at Brighton registry office. It was just the two of them, two witnesses and their photographer Sassy of Assassynation in attendance. After the ceremony, they all went to JB’s American Diner for burgers and milkshakes.

Carrie and Neil had a red and white wedding with rockabilly and polka dot touches! The day was held at Highbury Hall in Birmingham and was full of DIY décor. "We would like to think we were far more relaxed, friendly and laid-back than other wedding we have been to", began the bride. "So many weddings we have been to seem so stiff and uptight as a whole. We wanted a fun party atmosphere with a live band playing lots rockabilly, plenty of food for people to stuff their faces, and encouraged dancing until your feet dropped off. The word 'formal' never entered our vocabulary."

Helen and Toby's rainbow wedding took place at Coombes Farm in Lancing. The didn't have a huge budget, £8000, but they made it go far with plenty of personal touches and DIY projects. The cakes, flowers and stationery were all done by friends and they didn't hire a fancy caterer to feed their guests. Instead of gifts they asked their guests to each bring their favourite dish!

Sara and Dave were married in November. They had been together for 14 years and have 5 children so having a wedding had never really taken priority, but after visiting the amazing Eclectic Wedding Extravaganza Wedding Show in Birmingham, that all changed! "We met when I visited the local tattoo studio where Dave worked", began the bride. "We got chatting and basically things progressed pretty quickly. We both shared similar interests including, of course, tattoos and body piercing. We definitely live life to the full and how we want to. We have 5 super kids, 3 boys and 2 girls. Again they are very original in their own ways and are certainly free spirited."

Steven and Beth were married at Penarth Fawr Medieval Hall in June. Their reception was held in a marquee in the grounds of Gorwel Cottage, a holiday rental with sea views over Cardigan Bay and Pwllheli harbour. They didn't have a huge budget and so they homemade as much as they could including the flowers and stationery. They also had an afternoon tea and evening BBQ as their food which was a lot cheaper than many of the other options that they looked at.

Shane and Melissa didn't want to spent a lot to get married so they decided to have a small ceremony, with just a few friends and family in attendance, at the derelict St. Agnes Church in Detroit. They weren't bothered about following tradition and mainly wanted to make sure that they threw one hell of party! "We hate the big white wedding and the whole cut-and-paste experience so we wanted to do something different", began Carla. "No white wedding dress, no cutting of the cake, absolutely no bunting. Just us, relaxed and simple. I guess we set the scene when we sent out wedding invitations with a picture of two skeleton hands with their wedding rings on (till death do us part!)"
