Vintage cameras are all the rage right now. I've seen them used as props in various engagement and wedding day shoots. However, New Yorker Robert Christian Malmberg has taken it one step further, by reviving a photographic technique popular in the 19th Century. He uses is own Bellows camera and 'wet plate collodion' to create the effect you see below. His thinking is to make timeless images that contemporary Brides will love. I am super duper excited about this wedding/wedding day shoot (as you can probably tell because I've featured about 40 photographs!) I saw this wedding on one of my favourite non-wedding blogs Rockstar Diaries. The enviable gorgeous girl behind the site also produces her own hairpieces which is how I first got a glimpse of the gorgeousness. I immediately emailed the photographer and couple begging to be able to share their god damn crazy awesome wedding. Looks like Ella & Ben had a great time during their engagement session with Razvan of Razvan Photography. The session took place in a teeny tiny town called Kalkaska which is defined as a 'trout town' due to the huge trout festival that happens there every year - who knew?! Kirsten & Josh’s wedding not only had a fun, retro feel, but they really went all out with their 1950’s diner theme. I am crazy in love with the Brides entire outfit - from her Dorothy ruby slippers to her cute polka dot dress made by her Mother and friend Marnie Rogers, who designs clothes for Wintersun. The gorgeous Bridesmaid had a rockabilly style to them - especially their amazing hairdos! For the reception, the couple went all out for a 50's diner theme, where they designed and made everything themselves. The centrepieces were giant lolly jars and each table had a different type of old school lolly, which was the name of the table ("Sweethearts" "Milk bottles" "Ice creams" "Jelly beans" etc) The place cards were black & white candy striped lolly bags with everyone's names on them, each painstakingly tied with little red ribbons. The placemats were old records that they picked up in an op shop and they had little gifts for everyone on the table - mini erasers in the shape of burgers, fries, hotdogs and donuts, plus vintage metal wind up toys. Each table also had a diner style spring loaded napkin holder, salt and pepper shakers and tomato and mustard bottles. Then best of all, for dinner they served burgers, hotdogs, pizza and fries. I bet their guests were thrilled - no boring wedding food for them! The celebrations continued into the night with the couple having their first dance to 'I remember the Bride when she used to Rock n Roll' by the Stray Cats, finishing the night by swaying along to 'Earth Angel'. Billy & Rachel's wedding is sweet (as in sah-weet!) and reason numero uno has got to be Billy and his boys + their awesome H&M attire, closely followed by their tattoos (one of them has a tat that says 'rock n roll' for crying out loud!) Also, after they featured our wedding in their last issue, I dropped the guys at Wedding Ideas magazine a little email to say thank you and gosh darn it, they only went and printed it! Just wanted to drop you a line to say thanks for featuring our real wedding last month (Kat & Gareth). I picked up the magazine to flick through in the newsagents and was like 'ooh that's us!' - it is very cool. I am so over the moon to be the first blog to bring you this amazing wedding. Paul & Cassie's day really couldn't be anywhere but Rock n Roll Bride though surely? From her cute cute dress, to their kick ass tattoos - from the simply sweet ceremony site (just plastic chairs and autumnal leaves) to all the adorable personal touches (I am crazy in love with their thumb print wedding tree 'guest book'.) There is in fact nothing I don't love and I could go on with a big old list of everything I am swooning over right now. However it's probably better for me just to share the photographic joy oui? Woo! I have been dying to share the results from my photo shoot with Chanelle & Craig Segerius-Bruce so much so that I don't even have the full set yet so I'm going to do it in two parts. I met Chanelle for Sushi a while a go and we got a-chatting about doing a shoot together. We knew we wanted to come up with an idea that wasn't 'overdone' (even non brides-to-be worry about doing the same as everybody else...maybe I should read this article I wrote!?) Anyway, we came up with an idea revolving around an old castle and black...lots of black. This little inkling of an idea then evolved into shoot you see below. Despite buying a black dress from Ebay for the shoot, when it came to the crunch it just didn't look right so we went back on the old faithful, my Maggie Sottero wedding dress. I made the black veil myself out of some black tulle, a hair slide and lots of glue(!) and also broughtalong some various other colours of tulle which ended up coming in very handy (yes that is me splayed across a big rock and no it wasn't comfortable..or glamorous!) We trekked our arses all the way down to the Abbey Ruins in Reading town centre but when we got there it was all gated off with warning signs for potential falling rocks. Oh noooo! So what's a Rock n Roll Bride and photographer(s) to do? Hell break in and do the shoot anyway of course! Chanelle & Craig were fantaaaastic and played around with a new technique called 'painting with light'. I had to stand very still in one position for a number of shots while one of them moved around me flashing a flash for in different areas to highlight various area. I think you can see the results are pretty darn spectatorand give the images a real high fashion, edgy look. Chanelle is also an amazing re-toucher and has worked for no less than Mario Testino (oh yes!) so I knew me and my far from perfect skin were in good hands. Do you remember Jen & Grant's McEngagements? Well the couple went and got married and there was no Mcdonalds in sight. Jen & Grant cleverly integrated the color blue as a tribute to grant’s favorite team duke as well as tying in a playstation theme (see cufflinks below), and left plenty of room for her obsession with skulls. the hampshire house wedding venue was transformed for jen and grant’s dream wedding. for the ceremony, grant’s best man served as the officiant by becoming a JP for a day, by getting his one-day marriage designation in the state of massachusetts. they had one of the coolest sets of bridesmaids and groomsmen i’ve worked with. after the ceremony, the newlyweds allocated a bit of extra time beyond traditional formal photographs to allow for some creative portraits walking around downtown boston in the boston public garden and an MBTA subway station. at the reception, DJ addam bomb provided music that had everyone on the dancefloor, including jen’s 86 year old grandfather rocking out to billy idol’s “white wedding.” if you are having a boston wedding and are looking for a DJ that can throw down great alternative music, yet still has a tasteful demeanor, this is your guy.
