Sweethearts in South Africa

Kat

April 16, 2010

This is my second South African post within so many days and I'm pretty sure you're gonna dig this one just as much as the last. The lovely Laura actually found photographer Kat Forsyth through a post on Rock n Roll Bride so this session is even a little extra special to me. The Australian bride-to-be will be marrying her South African sweetheart Gustav (who she met in the UK - boy are these guys travelled!) back in Australia later this year and judging from the coolness of this engagement session, I just know their wedding is going to be Rock n Roll Bride worthy!

Light-hearted & Personal

Kat

April 14, 2010

I love a quirky London wedding just as much as the next person so I whooped with joy when Connie & Jonny's was send my way. "We wanted to bring all our friends and family together for a massive party to celebrate us getting hitched" the bride began. "We kept certain traditions - getting everyone to sit down and have a big feed, and speeches etc, but we weren't keen on all the flowery formal bits, so to keep things lighthearted and personal we had the lovely ukelele band. We put our friends and family on a routemaster bus back to the reception (at Lena Restaurant, 66 Great Eastern St, London) Amazing food, great party space downstairs with loads of champagne. A friend drove my dad and I to the town hall in his VW camper van, and took Jonny and I (with music booming, a healthy supply of champagne) back to the reception (we drove back via regent’s park and stopped off in the sunshine to take it all in). Not really up for flowery delicate invites, we got Hanway print centre to print us some bright orange postcards. Jonny’s dad made the wedding cake and my mom and friends organised the flowers."

Stop Staring

Kat

April 14, 2010

Jacquie & Robby's fun yet sexy engagements were sent over to me today. I instantly fell in love with her funky style (her 'Leopard Lolita Dress' is by Stop Staring she got it from Daddy-o's) and their 'poking-fun' attitude - gotta love that 'RIP Rob' graffiti behind them! "We had these pictures taken in March 2010 on the outskirts of Baltimore, Maryland" Jacquie explained. "We explored the area and happened to come across the graffiti that said "RIP Rob" and although I usually hate that old idea that once a man is married his life is over, but I couldn't resist taking a picture seeing that my fiance name is Robby! Also, we stumbled across that old red car and we loved the pictures near the car so much, we used one for our save the dates. If you take a look at the pictures of us near the car, you will notice that a train went by while we were shooting. That day seemed like it was really meant to be."

Sweet, kind and darling. Their blog posts never fail to cheer me and they just seem so genuinely LOVELY! OK enough gushing...you're going to adore these images taken at the DC Cherry Blossom Festival by their wedding photographer Leo Patrone(who I'm hoping to meet when he comes over to London soon!) The light, the colours, the fashion, the fun and lurrrve...aww just so perfect.

All the Fun of the Fair

Kat

April 13, 2010

Amy & Darren are a gorgeous, fun and music-loving couple who are getting married this June in the New Forest. The idea for their engagement shoot was just to follow them having fun and sharing the things they love. "We started the shoot at their place in Blackheath, London" photographer Sarah told me "with me shooting from the mezzanine down on them lying amongst a fraction of their 5000-strong record collection, even Martha the cat wanted a piece of the action!" "Next, we took a trip up the road to take advantage of the gorgeous evening light at the May bank holiday fair on Blackheath, finishing with a stroll through Greenwich Park to the bandstand which holds a romantic significance to them as a couple as it's where they spent a lot of time together when they first started courting."

Community Spirit

Kat

April 13, 2010

British photographer Dolly Photography may be new to the scene but she sure knows her own passions and one of her dreams is to raise awareness and support her local community. "I come from Barnsley, a very small Northern mining town that is still recovering from the depression of the pit closures" She told me "I have loads of work I'd love to submit, but this one is close to my heart. I did a Rock The Dress shoot last week for Barnsley Hospice, a charity that looks after terminal cancer patients. They have 8 charity shops and wanted to promote the fact that they sold second hand wedding dresses - some for as little as £40 a dress!" So, she asked her sister to model for her in a gorgeous £40 dress from Barnsley Hospice and carrying a vintage umbrella that she found on ebay for £10. Her hair piece was also a bargain at £10 in the sale from Diva Bridal, Barnsley.

Brighton Rock n Roll

Kat

April 11, 2010

There are a select few UK photographers that I truly love and I think Pippa Mckenzie may be joining that group. I fell in love with her relaxed, documentary inspired style and couldn't wait to share this rockin' Brighton engagement session with you. "Natalie & James live in Surrey, and often hang out in Brighton" Pippa told me. "They are young, quirky and very successful property developers. They are such a cool, hip and fun loving couple and we wanted to really capture their characters in their e-Shoot. They had a few costume changes for the shoot to contrast the beach shots with classy rock n roll amongst the Brighton Lanes. We thought the edgy surroundings of Brighton really complimented their characters."

Bollywood Bride

April 10, 2010

Gorgeous Indian brides and weddings certainly don't get enough coverage in Blogland - which is crazy because the colours, the fun and the unique traditions are certainly things that blogs usually swoon over. I have a couple of Indian friends - one that is already married and one that has been to a lot of her family's weddings and I'm always intrigued to hear about them. My favourite story was that one of my friends had to walk around the ceremony carrying a pineapple on her head and when she asked her Mum why she had to do it or what it was about she replied "that's just what we do" Ha!To this day she still doesn't know the significance of the pineapple that messed up her hair!

London Chic

Kat

April 9, 2010

There is something so endearing and glamorous about a Central London wedding. I fell in love with Lia & Gerard's portraits and soon as I saw them - which just proves how fab photographer Chloe Browne is as the couple only allowed 5 minutes for photographs. They didn't want any family formals either! The whole day was really laid back, relaxed and chilled with a great party atmosphere. "I was so excited to photograph Lia & Gerald at the Haymarket Hotel in London for their wedding in March" Chloe told me. "They were my first couple who weren't keen on spending time on portraits, so I had to persuade them gently to come outside with me for a few minutes. It was still freezing cold, but I managed to convince them to spend 3 minutes with me outside on the street-I really wanted their photos to reflect that they got married in Central London. We then dipped downstairs to the pool room for a couple of photos before I let them get back to the party. Their style was so timeless, I wanted to have a few frames that felt like they were from the Rat Pack era-I hope the black and whites have that kind of feel. They were so cool to photograph-I loved every one of our five minutes!"

Fun, Casual & Romantic

Kat

April 9, 2010

Will & Myriam's ceremony took place at Pencarrow House in Cornwall and then it was all back to the parent's house for food and drink! "There's not much to tell" Will began "We did everything the way we did because we had known we wanted to be husband and wife for ages, so it was more a question of getting the day out of the way! We didn't want to make a fuss about the day, or do anything cheesy, we just wanted it to be 'a fun and casual get-together with romantic bits' and we had an ultra-minimal budget" Myriam wore a dress from Monsoon, Will's bespoke suit was found at Ferguson Nash in Warwick and their hilarious tee-shirts were from the aptly named Fuckuall.

Outdoorsy Autumn Diy Wedding

Kat

April 9, 2010

Summer & Frank got married exactly a year after their first date. The wedding had an Autumn theme and was held at a local park. Their reception was at one of their favourite hang outs - Fatty's in Astoria. "I started looking for parks in our area where we could also hold the reception." Summer told me. "We're both very casual and outdoorsy, so we didn't want anything formal--we wanted the focus to be more on the happiness of the day. The cost for renting local parks is a shocking fraction of more formal venues, too, and you can bring in your own catering, which gives you more options for food. I'm a vegetarian, so that was important."

What a Small World…

Kat

April 8, 2010

I love a shoot with a great story behind it...especially when it revolves around people I know! When bride-to-be Laura checked in on Rock n Roll Bride a few months ago she fell in love with the work of UK photographer, David McNeil. She promptly contacted him to arrange an engagement shoot in Brighton. Her fiance Nick and her turned up on the morning of the shoot, only to discover that unbeknownst to both of the boys, they already knew each other! David and Nick actually used to work together long before David tried his hand at wedding photography and Nick got engaged...but wait the tale gets stranger because when David sent me these images it turns out I used to work with Nick too! What a small world...

Pink Lady

Kat

April 8, 2010

Nope this isn't one of my photo shoots - but model Jennifer and I sure to have one (very pink) thing in common! The shoot took place in Richmond, VA at Belle Isle which is a park that has a large suspension bridge that takes you to another small island that has several abandoned buildings including an old power plant on it - perfect shooting ground! "The power plant is really cool, lots of graffiti and crumbling architecture" photographer Jan told me. "Her dress was bought at a thrift store for $3, we added the black sash to give it more character. She was an awesome model, with great pink hair and lots of style I hope to photograph her wedding eventually. I love your blog by the way. It's completely along the lines of what I'm interested in and I love to see other photographers and brides that are unique and have style not typical boring brides."

Rock n Roll Ink

Kat

April 6, 2010

Oh how I love these!! I mean what's not to love? As photographer Paulus explains "Paula is a sentimental, fashionable, crazy gothic lolita girl and Teddy is an easy going, noodle maniac, graphic master, straight to the point guy. They both came up with this amazing concept. Both of them are tattoo lovers, so they decided to shoot their photos at Rock n Roll Tattoo. They got their vows inked on their arms." Yeah so these guys are pretty much perfecto for Rock n Roll Bride aren't they?
