The Inspirations: Chris Guillebeau & The Art of Non-Conformity

Kat

June 6, 2012

While in New York last month, I was lucky enough to meet author and entrepreneur Chris Guillebeau through our mutual friend Megan. From our brief encounter I was enthralled by his story of traveling the world, writing books and - without wanting to sound like a big cliché- living the dream! Then, when I got home, I had an email from Chris saying how lovely it was so meet me and how great he thought my business was! Holy cow...

A 3-day Wedding at a Rockstar’s Retreat: Holly & Karen

Kat

June 6, 2012

Ridge Farm, a working farm and ex-recording studio in Surrey, proved to be the perfect location for Holly & Karen's May wedding. "What made our wedding Rock n Roll? Definitely the venue!" Holly told me. "Aside from being a beautiful farm that we fell in love with instantly, Ridge Farm is also a recording studio where so many of our musical heroes have recorded albums and stayed - so our wedding guests were partying in the very same place that Queen, Whitesnake, Muse, Roxy, Rush and many more have partied! We hired the farm for the entire long weekend - Karen is Irish and it's Irish tradition to hold 3 day long weddings so we had a big meal on the Friday for family and friends then the wedding on the Saturday, followed by a pool party with live music and a hog roast for everyone on the Sunday. The farm sleeps 24 plus there is a camping field so all our hungover guests could just crawl out of bed on Sunday morning and stumble over to rejoin the party. By Sunday evening everyone was in the jacuzzi swigging prosecco from the bottle, even Karen's mum!"

Copying, Copyright and the Creation of Trends within the Wedding Industry

Kat

June 5, 2012

This week I was all set to write an article about copying, copyright in design and what to do when you percieve your work to be ripped off. And then, when researching the topic, I came across this TED talk by Johanna Blakely, entitled 'Lessons from Fashion's Free Culture'. Johanna questioned my ideas and flipped the whole subject on it's head in my mind. I urge you to take 15 minutes out and watch this...

A Waterside Wedding in Rio de Janeiro: Adriana & Daniel

Kat

June 5, 2012

For their November wedding, Adriana & Daniel were keen to inject as much of both their cultures (Brazilian & British) into the day as possible. The event was held at Iate Clube de Búzios, a yacht club in Rio de Janeiro. The bride designed her own dress and used handmade lace from Renda Renascença with the help of dressmaker Inês Uemura. "Sometimes you shoot a wedding that is so amazing, that it is only when you look back on your images and film that you can actually even remember what happened," wedding photographer Maria of Studio 1208 told me. "The whole thing is so effortless, yet it moves like a beautiful old steam locomotive, thundering past you and carrying you away into some distant land."

Weight Loss and Weddings

Kat

June 4, 2012

"Fat, fat fat fat fat!" read Martha's Facebook status. I'd seen updates about her diet plan and weight goals over the past few months and it urked me. In fact anyone talking about weight loss and dieting makes me feel uncomfortable... it's just one of those things I don't like being thrust in my face. Diets can be dangerous things. I've had personal experience. But Martha's statuses upset me particularly because I knew for a fact that only reason she was dieting was to fit into that size 10 Ian Stuart number. Yes, Martha is trying to lose weight for her wedding.

The Importance of Communication: A Guest Post by Brett Harkness

Kat

June 1, 2012

If you read through a bridal magazine, you will notice that there will be plenty of ‘How-to’ articles and ‘What questions to ask’ advice pieces. There’s a reason behind this of course. For the most part, planning a wedding will be a very new experience for those about to embark on married life and guidance will be really important. Because of this, it isn’t uncommon for the happy couple to be full to the brim with questions, no matter what you are offering them: a venue, the food, photography. They will want to know about sizes, options and prices, and how you can help them to create their special day.

A New York State of Mind: A Hop Skip & Jump Across The Brooklyn Bridge

Kat

June 1, 2012

So here we have it, the final installment of Gala & my frolic around NYC! When Christina & I first starting thinking about shooting in New York there was one place top of both of our lists - The Brooklyn Bridge! Iconic the world over, nothing screams New York more than this structure... or the amazing views from it! After a slightly hair-raising cab ride through China Town and over the Manhattan Bridge, we arrived in Brooklyn and proceeded to walk the 1.1 miles over the East River towards Manhattan.

The Inspirations: Elsie Larson of A Beautiful Mess/Red Velvet

Kat

May 30, 2012

Following on from chatting to one of my favourite bloggers last week, I thought I'd follow suit with this edition of The Inspirations and speak to another incredibly inspiring blogger. Although calling Elsie Larson mearly a 'blogger' is doing her a huge disservice and is an understatement of epic proportions! She is a multifaceted business woman with mad skills. A master of multi-tasking she, alongside her sister and business partner Emma, runs a hugely successful blog (which current gets over 170,000 views a day!), owns a vintage clothing boutique, an online shop (where they sell their own line of dresses!)..oh she's also currently writing her first book! Way to make us feel lazy superwoman.

The Minecraft Wedding: Matt & Asia

Kat

May 30, 2012

Confession: I can't take any of the credit for finding this wedding...this baby was aaaaall Gareth's doing! I'm quite the Minecraft widow actually, and when I drag myself from my computer to my bed at night I can often hear him watching the latest Yogscast video (at full volume of course!) Needless to say he's a bit of a fan... So when the creator of Minecraft, Markus Persson (known online as 'Notch'), tweeted about a wedding themed around the game, Gareth was straight away begging me to try and feature it. In fact I've never seen him run into my office so fast "Ooohmiiigaaaawd there's a Minecraft wedding! You HAVE to feature it! Pleeeease! Pleeeeeeeeease! How do you not know about this already!?? This is the coolest wedding ever ever ever!"

Wedding Photography Workshops 2012

Kat

May 29, 2012

I'm not ashamed to admit that I love a photography workshop. No, I know, I'm not a professional photographer but I find them so inspiring! I've also been lucky enough to be involved with organising, speaking at and generally sharing the love for so many of them. So, today I thought I'd put together a comprehensive list of some of the ones that are coming up soon. There is a workshop out there for you, the hardest part is picking the right one!
