Although times they are a-changing, gay and lesbian couples have been long overlooked in the wedding industry. While there are many amazing wedding suppliers that cater for and love to work with same-sex couples, there has yet to be a really cool, all inclusive wedding event that all engaged couples - no matter their preferences - can go to and feel comfortable and accepted. Sure, there have been a few magazines and events dedicated to gay weddings, but (and I hate to say it) but most of the ones I've seen have been slightly cheesy and erring on the side of tacky.

Don’t Panic!

Probably one of the biggest - and toughest - lessons I've learnt through running my own business is that things are never as straight forward as you think they'll be. Last week, after returning from a fortnight away from the office, I was met with the news that there was a complication (which was our fault) with the printing of the magazine. It was looking like we'd have to redesign a whole section, rearrange a bunch of stuff and then resubmit the whole document for proofing and printing again. This was not only looking to be a pretty costly mistake but one that was going to delay the release date of the mag by at least a month.

Salvador Dali Inspired Surrealist Wedding: Demi & Steven

September 17, 2013

Between them, Demi and Steven have degrees is art history, psychology and education so they wanted their wedding to reflect these passions. Initially they thought about having a pop art inspired day as the bride loves Andy Warhol but they then decided they actually wanted something slightly vintage and with an old Hollywood feel. "It seemed only natural that we have a surrealist inspired wedding as we are fascinated by the subconscious and bizarre", wrote Demi. "Surrealism is about desire, frenzy, and unconscious drives. This seemed very appropriate to our relationship. I also like the irony of the intense misogyny of surrealism mingled with the fact that a woman planned everything."

Marina & Phil wanted a small and intimate destination wedding in Maui. They love to travel and adore the water so a ceremony at Ali'i Kula Lavender Farm followed by an after dinner boat cruise was perfect! "We love the outdoors", Marina wrote. "In particular, we love picnics with a great view. That's what we ended up doing - a wonderful picnic on a mountain on a tropical island. We laugh that we could not decide whether to get married on a mountain or on a tropical island, so did both. We also decided to have our wedding on the 4th of July because we wanted fireworks!"

Planning a wedding is bloody hard work and sometimes it can all get a bit too much. I'm sure you've stressed a little over flower arrangements, worried if your bridesmaids will like their dresses or navigated your way through more family issues than you even knew you had. Big weddings are wonderful occasions but I'm yet to meet a couple who haven't wondered at some point if that crazy idea to elope was really so crazy after all.

Back in March 2012, I was asked to speak at The Photography Farm, a wedding photography workshop hosted by the amazing Lisa Devlin. At each 3-day workshop we also include an epic styled shoot for the students to practice their new-found skills. For this particular class we decided to go for a spooky modern Miss Havisham theme and the incredible Jo of The Couture Company offered to make us a bespoke dress to fit the theme.

Roxy and Daniel's ceremony took place in Daniel's parents' neighbourhood, Bourland Field Estates, in Cresson, TX. It also just happens to be an airport neighbourhood! The streets are runways and everyone has massive garages to house their planes. The couple chose yellow as the main colour in their wedding so what could have been more perfect than a brilliant yellow plane that was lent by their neighbour for the photos!?

September 6, 2013

Ellie and Ed wanted their June wedding to not only reflect them - their likes and loves - but to be a fun day for everyone, full of DIY details. The day started with an emotional ceremony at Aldenham School, Elstree and the reception was in tipis on Buckettsland Farm, Well End. "We said the whole way through the planning process that we didn't have a theme but looking back it was essentially junk and glitter", began the bride. "If you ever saw our flat, you would know that we’re not matchy-matchy people in the slightest. I love tack and have a big collection of oddities, plus I have an obsession with the stars and the moon and anything glittery, so I always knew they would end up making an appearance."
