Johnny and Jess, two Brooklyn-dwelling bunny parents, decided to get married in their first shared neighbourhood: Greenpoint. While the ceremony had a Jewish foundation, they went for a less conventional feel such as taking shots at the altar!
They wanted a really colourful day too; the wedding party wore mismatched dresses of their choice, while Jess wore a lace dress that let her tattoos pop. As a graphic designer, the design of the reception was super important to the bride too. It featured disco balls, bright flowers, custom matchbooks, a rooftop smoking station, and a Nintendo for guests to play!
“We wanted the day to feel curated yet carefree,” Jess explained. “I love a cohesive colour palette, and thoughtfully designed paper goods were a must. Above all though, we wanted everything to feel playful and fun.”
The couple wove together modern elements with some traditions. Under a rooftop chuppah framed by family tallits and bright, cascading florals, they were married by a friend, who they wrote the ceremony script with. “We had a long coffee date to make sure it felt personal”, the bride continued. “We decided to incorporate ‘his and hers shots’ into our ceremony. Johnny did a shot of whiskey while I opted for tequila. We both wrote our own vows. They were incredibly heartfelt with a hint of humour which felt perfect for us. The vows were the talk of the wedding for the entire night.”
At the reception, they decided to keep the first dance, parent dances, and the hora, but added in silly things like temporary tattoos in the bathroom, and a ‘first game’ of Mario Kart Double Dash on the GameCube. One particular highlight was during cocktail hour when they snuck away for five minutes to have a drink and eat some canapes by to themselves.
While their rabbits weren’t there in person, they were included throughout the day on the custom matchbooks which guests to take away as favours, and on the drinks’ menu.
The day was full of laughter and surprises, including a last-minute tattoo Jess got a week before the wedding—Johnny’s name on her butt! “It was silly, it gave us a (much needed) good laugh and helped us recapture the joy of getting married,” she said.
Their advice to others? If you can, hire a wedding planner. “Ours kept everything running smoothly, and we didn’t even realise there had been wedding crashers until the next day!” Jess laughed. “A wedding planner will help you find vendors that fit your vision, keep you on schedule, and take care of any unforeseen hiccups.”
