10 Alternative Wedding Ideas from the Movies

Carrie re-wearing her iconic Vivienne Westwood gown in And Just Like That

Movies have always been a place for larger-than-life love stories and unforgettable visuals, especially when it comes to the characters getting married. A truly iconic wedding scene can also influence real weddings and wedding trends for years afterwards!

Here’s some of our favourite alternative ideas from the movies which will make your own big day feel like something straight out of a cult classic.

1. Pop-Up Ceremony
The Vow (2012)

The wedding scene in The Vow is an intimate and lovely moment where Paige and do a ‘pop-up’ ceremony and exchange vows in an art gallery without permission. The scene ends with them being chased out by security guards, laughing the whole way. Romantic perfection.

2. The Bride in Trainers
Father of the Bride (1991)

The basketball loving bride in Nike trainers? HELL YES! Despite coming out in 1991, a lot of this wedding still holds up (90s is now vintage after all – wahh!) and who can forget the wedding planner, Franck, and the swans in the bath!?

3. Gothic Bridesmaids
27 Dresses (2008)

27 Dresses obviously has a lot of wedding porn in it (you can see all the weddings featured here!) and although it was supposed to be a bit of a joke in the movie, the gothic wedding and those bridesmaid outfits specifically, were actually pretty bad ass.

4. Ceremony Location
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 (2011)

The wedding ceremony in Twilight has been replicated by many a real couple and it’s not at all surprising! Set in a lush forest adorned with cascading white blooms and delicate greenery, Bella and Edward’s nuptials feel like stepping into a magical woodland dream.

The less said about that engagement ring the better though đź‘€

5. The Aisle
Crazy Rich Asians (2018)

The whole wedding scene from Crazy Rich Asians is jaw-dropping. The decor, outfits, the beautiful singing, the flowers, the lighting and the aisle transforming into a river are all, well, pretty crazy.

Even if your budget doesn’t extend to having a river as an aisle, you have to admit this is one movie wedding you wish you could replicate!

6. Mismatched Bridesmaid Dresses
Sex and the City (2008)

Big and Carrie’s first attempt at tying the knot in Sex and the City movie wasn’t exactly a success, but all the women looked incredible! Carrie’s Vivienne Westwood gown was a real showstopper, the bird was certainly a choice, and Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha all looked amazing in their mismatched, differently coloured dresses.

7. The Floating Ceremony
Bridesmaids (2011)

When they finally make it to the wedding, the ceremony scene in Bridesmaids was worth all the drama! The couple and their wedding parties stood in front of a cascading waterfall, creating the illusion that they’re floating on water.

8. That Celebrant Speech
The Princess Bride (1987)

The celebrant’s speech in The Princess Bride is one of the most iconic moments of the film, and is probably one of the most memorable movie wedding scenes of all time! Delivered with a comical lisp, the line “Mawwiage is what bwings us togevah today” has been replicated at many a real wedding ceremony since the movie came out in the 80s!

9. The Great British Weather
About Time (2013)

The wedding in About Time is a perfect mix of romance and utter chaos. Mary’s red dress is a break from tradition, but the real moment is all the laughter as their outdoor, festival-style reception is completely obliterated by the rain!

This movie wedding reminds us that even if things go wrong on the day, it really doesn’t matter. Your wedding doesn’t have to be perfect to be magical.

10: The Photo Shoot
The Parent Trap (1998)

The scene in which every child of the 80s and 90s decided they wanted to be as cool as Elizabeth James when they grow up. The photo shoot scene sees Hallie posing with the model and helping her mum choose the outfit. This scene is a real nostalgic time capsule of 90s bridal fashion. And bring back the bridal top hat we say!
