This is Alysia’s final column for Rock n Roll Bride magazine (sobs, cries) and although we are so sad to see her go, we’re going to be opening this page up to different wedding experts going forward. If you have any wedding planning woes that you’d love to get an expert’s opinion or advice on, email magazine@rocknrollbride.com with the subject line ASK AN EXPERT and we may use your question in a future edition!

I’m trying to find ways to add feminine touches to a suit (or possibly masc touches to a dress?) but not sure what that could look like. Any ideas?

Absolutely! Styling a more traditionally masculine piece with feminine elements (or vice versa) is a brilliant way to express yourself and make sure your wedding outfit feels like it represents you more holistically.

Let’s start with the suit! I find a great starting place can be choosing a colourful suit rather than the traditional black, white, navy, etc. Bringing in colour that exists in your wedding theme can really complete the story. For styling, I love a cathedral-length cape attached to the suit jacket. Working with a soft tulle or flowing organza for the cape balances the sharp angles of a suit with an airy, feminine feel. Wearable flowers are another great styling trick to bring in a feminine touch to your suit. You can choose to do this with fabric flowers or work with your florist for fresh ones—although depending on the weather, fresh flowers on your suit may not last for the whole day! A grander and more over-the-top version of a buttonhole, floral lapels can be placed on one or both lapels of your suit and may build up towards your shoulder. The florals add the perfect pop of colour and change up the silhouette of the suit ever so slightly.

Now let’s talk about styling options to add masculine elements to a gown. I would first consider ways we can add harder lines, structure, or any elements of traditional menswear. A jacket or topper can be a quick way to bring in a masculine feeling. The Law Bridal’s Jones jacket is a perfect example of this. The top is a collar design that has an almost suit-like feel and buttons down the side of the floor-length piece, but it is also a sheer material that can be styled open and on top of your gown. This way it will still blend with your dress while taking nothing away from the overall look.

What kind of outfits should I consider for my wedding day as a nonbinary person? Any designer suggestions that lean more androgynous that I should keep on my radar?

Finding a wedding outfit that feels good and authentic always takes a little creative styling, but that need to look outside the “traditional” can definitely be heightened for nonbinary marriers.

A quick disclaimer: in the past, I’ve had nonbinary clients who feel pressured to dress androgynously because there’s a feeling of expectation that androgyny is what a nonbinary person must wear. However, I want to remind you that androgyny is never a must, and that whatever style you feel best in, whether that’s something super feminine, super masculine, or anything in between, is a perfect reflection of you simply because you love it. With that said, question asker, you’ve specifically mentioned you’d like something androgynous leaning so let me make a few suggestions!

QUEERA’s Volume 1 collection is one of my all-time favourite wedding-adjacent collections that plays with gender expectations. Full ball gowns paired with tan suit jackets, red billowing sheer sleeves, beaded jackets paired with trousers… The collection is brilliant and even if you don’t have the budget for that level of couture for your outfit, the inspiration alone is worth a look!

HauteButch has a great custom suit option online where you can build out exactly what you’re looking for. Traditional suits don’t usually take into account folks with hips or a bust, and HauteButch can help make sure the suit fits the way you want! Little Black Tux also make great pieces designed for female and nonbinary customers at a really affordable price point.

There are some wonderful pieces from Christian Siriano’s bridal collection as well. In particular, I love the tuxedo gown for a fun play on the traditional bridal gown, and also love the lace and organza suit set where the blazer has an asymmetric ruffle detail that falls down the floor.

Just remember to trust your gut—you know what you feel best in!
