This is the story of a rock ‘n’ roll singer, and a bombshell of a babe writer. Matty and Sid locked eyes during one oh his sets, and the rest was history.  The next year was spent planning their backyard wedding in Santa Cruz, CA, for their one year anniversary.

Their vision was to bring Vegas vibes, with a sweetheart vintage Valentine’s sort of romance to the space. Two of the bride’s besties, owners of Thank you Come Again Flower Shop, adorned the space with loads of gorgeous flowers and the light-up heart was hand built by the groom. He also made every single heart cut out bench.  The vintage inspired 3-tier cherry cake was baked by a neighbour.

This was a homespun, community-led wedding through and through. The level of contribution from every friend and family member, only added to the love and beauty of the day. “We think our hands-on approach really made our wedding unique”, Sid told us. “There was no wedding planner but the trust of everyone we included in making our vision come to life. We both found it very important that we hire friends, besides the pizza and table rentals, which were both local companies. Having people we knew and trusted to display their own creative twist on our vision really made our day different than any other wedding I’ve been apart of. We had the freedom to make the day whatever we wanted, and that was our favourite part,”

For the ceremony, Matty’s client, Billy Reese, performed Bad to the Bone for the boys to arrive to. The bridesmaids then walked in to Girls Just Want to Have Fun, dressed in pink shorts matching sets and cheetah print Betsey Johnson shoes. Sid chose to walk with her little sister. The officiant, another dear friend, delivered a speech that left few dry eyes. “Our ceremony was intimate and divine” Sid recalled. “It was exactly what we wanted.”

The reception was as relaxed as the couple intended. Pizza from a local favourite and barefoot kids running through the garden set the tone for an easygoing celebration. “We loved seeing everyone with a slice of pizza in hand, chatting and laughing,” says Sid. “We had a child-friendly wedding so during the reception little bare feet toes ran around with grubby fingers and big smiles having a party of their own.”

Reflecting on their planning experience, the couple highlighted the importance of enjoying the process and involving those you trust. “We had so many ideas,” Sid admits. “We could only fit so much into the space, but the creative freedom we had made it all worth it.”

“We also changed our last name to Bones!”, she concluded. “Both of us have no connection to the last names we were given so we thought, ‘what the heck! Let’s create our own dynasty!'”
