Johnny and Megan’s autumn wedding was held in their own remote home in the Catskills. They focused on the contrast between slow rural and the high energy of the city. They found their officiant in a burlesque house in NYC, had a hidden digestive bar, flash tattoos, tarot readings and many other surprises for their guests. They even hired a petting zoo and walked down the aisle accompanied by goats!
“Our inspiration came from 10 years of being together, the experiences we’ve had, places we’ve been, the people we’ve met along the way” Megan told us. “From tarot and tattoos, to a petting zoo of farm animals, and a burlesque variety show host, we wanted to capture our energy together and share it with the loved ones in our lives. We’re also crazy and bought a cabin together in the mountains the year after we started dating. Our spot upstate has been our special place together and really shaped how we wanted our declaration of love to be.”
Their wedding was certainly not traditional. Officiated by a burlesque performer, whose character initially shocked, he ultimately charmed the guests with his thoughtful words. As the ceremony began, Leon Haywood’s I Want to Do Something Freaky to You played and the couple arrived flanked by goats. Their original planned for alpaca escorts was scuppered as they were too sassy for the occasion!
Fog and bubble machines plumed their energy across acres of yellow goldenrod and they set up tents for the reception. All the flowers were picked from the property and surrounding area. This was a DIY wedding through and through, with friends and family helping with every aspect. “We did all the planning ourselves and our friends and family rolled up their sleeves and helped with EVERYTHING”, Megan continued. “We could not have pulled it off without them.”
Their highlight of the day was the speeches and the party went on way into the night with dancing, a DJ spinning vinyl records, tarot readings and people getting impromptu tattoos!
Their advice to others? “Be weird and have fun together. Try not to get too caught up thinking about what you’re supposed to be doing and just follow your hearts.”
