Party Like it’s a Pandemic: A Low-Key London Wedding

Unintentionally, Vicky and Jake’s September became vintage London themed because they wanted to show off the city that they love. They chose Chelsea Old Town Hall as both their ceremony and reception venue, booked a vintage double decker red bus and planned their photos around some of the most iconic tourist attractions. Décor and theme wise they did keep things pretty simple, choosing simple DIY floral arrangements that let the venue be the star of the show.

Vicky wore a Needle and Thread dress, a jacket from Nasty Gal, and Public Desire boots. Her veil was vintage, and her mum’s, and her epic floral mask was homemade, inspired by this shoot which we published over the summer!

“I think the most unique thing about our wedding is that we had it during a pandemic”, Vicky told us. “We really tried to embrace the government restrictions into our wedding with matching masks and pandemic swag bags. We also dragged our guests around London to eat doughnuts and get photos at fun tourist location… Not many couples can say they had formal wedding photos outside Buckingham Palace!”

“With the government guidelines at the time we were allowed to have 30 guests but five days our group of friends in Devon friends all either tested positive for COVID or were isolating. My Dad, maid of honour, two bridesmaids, Jake’s best man and a groomsmen couldn’t make it in the end, so within 24 hours, our guest list went from 30 to 15 and we didn’t have time or the energy to fill the spaces. It was devastating but everyone who was able to come filled our day with so much love and helped us create the most wonderful memories. Nothing about our day went to plan but we managed to pull off a wedding during a pandemic and no-one contracted the virus from the day so we’ll take that as a huge win!”

“One of the highlights was watching the pre-recorded messages sent from family and friends. There were messages, speeches and even a Jake and Vicky poem that was projected onto a screen for us. It was so emotional and special.”

Although it wasn’t the day they would have had if COVID wasn’t a thing, in the end they were so happy that they were able to marry in 2020 and the way they did their way. “If we could change anything (other than not have our wedding during a pandemic) we would have hired a wedding planner. At the start it was so nice to have the freedom to individually pick everything however it then became very difficult trying to organise so many suppliers around each other.”

“Our advice for other couples is to not plan your wedding for other people. We initially got so swept up in planning a wedding to conform with everyone else’s ideal wedding and what a wedding should be like when actually it wasn’t anything what we wanted. In the end Jake and I blocked out everyone else’s wants and created a wedding that reflected us as a couple.”
