Holly & Jake were married on a pirate ship… in the middle of a shopping mall in Edmonton, Canada. Nope, there’s nothing unusual about that at all! They had wedding photographer Michel Feist of Ampersand Grey to capture their ceremony and portraits.
“Our inspiration was just using what we liked and what matched our personalities”, explained the bride. “We wanted something that was fun and laid back. We wanted people to come and say ‘Yeah that was totally Holly’ or ‘That was a really Jake thing to do’. What made us Rock n Roll was that we didn’t want to fit in with other kinds of weddings. We didn’t worry about having a really fancy affair. We kept the important parts really important and the rest was just fun. We made sure that the wedding represented who we are and we aren’t really fancy people so we didn’t think the wedding needed to be either.”
“The ceremony was definitely the best part of our day”, she continued. “Being on a boat in the mall was pretty sweet and getting our photos done was awesome. Having our family and friends there was also amazing.”
The couple had handmade wedding rings which they made for each other. “Jake designed my ring and I designed his. We used a wax ring tubes to mould them and then we got them cast by Precision Jewelry Manufacturing . After they were cast, Jake filed, sanded and polished them himself, and instead of a diamond he put in a piece of Muonianalusta meteorite.”
Gorgeous! Thank you to Holly & Jake and their photographer Michel for sharing this with us today. So what do you say – would you ever get married on a pirate ship?!

A Modern Wedding on an Aeroplane: Robyn & Tom

Both air traffic controllers, and with a mutual attention to detail and love for planes, Robyn & Tom were thrilled when they were allowed to get married on a Pacific Western plane at Edmonton Aviation Museum. "It took a lot of convincing but the museum were gracious to allow the bride and groom to use the airplane", explained their Canadian wedding photographer Elizabeth of ENV Photography. "Guests were assigned seats on a seating chart that mimicked the chart that you pick your seat from when booking your plane ticket! Prior to the groom walking down, his sons and daughter walked down the aisle and handed out cookies to all the guests - just like a real airline!"

Atmospheric Lake District Wedding: Helen & Andy

I was rather over-excited when I laid eyes on Helen and Andy's Lake District wedding, shot by the amazing Neil Douglas Photography. I mean what could be more incredible than getting wedding day portraits like these in a setting like that!? Hats off to the photographer of course, but also to the awesome couple for not being afraid to potentially get a little wet or muddy. I'd love to see more brave couples like this please, who's with me?
The wedding was held in Buttermere, with the ceremony in a local church and the reception in a tipi in Buttermere field. The couple didn't have a huge budget and opted to DIY and thrift a lot. Helen wore a dress which she bought off eBay for £100 and customised with her grandmother's vintage fur (a last minute edition due to the weather).

A Broadway Musical Wedding: Carin & Pouya

When Carin & Pouya got engaged, the bride instantly knew what their wedding theme would be - Broadway musical! "I have always loved Broadway musicals and three years ago Pouya took me to my first live production - The Wizard of Oz", Carin writes. "I was instantly hooked! Since then I've got season tickets to Broadway performances across Canada including our hometown of Edmonton. I never thought of incorporating that into the wedding, but after a while the Broadway musical theme came to me while I was bored one day in a class in University. I was looking around on the internet when I saw a wedding program that looked like a playbill and the ideas spiraled from there!"

Chicago Boat Wedding: Sonia & Balthazar

Sonia & Balthazar's wedding was anything but typical. This casual couple turned up late, got ready in minutes, sailed off on a boat for the ceremony and had a meal at a Russian restaurant for their reception.
"My husband and I are in love with the sea - the smell, the mystery and the expansiveness", began the bride. "We feel most comfortable near large bodies of water, so the idea of getting married on a boat seemed like the most appropriate. We had sailed on the Red Witch in 2009 with Balthazar's aunt and uncle in Port Washington during a tall ship festival. We overheard the Captain saying that they host parties and weddings and looked at each other simultaneously, with the same thought in mind: this is our vessel of love."

A 1940s & Vegan Wedding in Canada: Sarah & Carol

Sarah & Carol had a destination wedding in Canada. With Sarah originally from Canada the pair, who now live in Brighton, wanted to fly back for the wedding. "We decided to be married in Sarnia because Carol is incredibly attached to her hometown and the beaches and water of Lake Huron (can you blame her?)", wrote newlywed Carol. "At the time we booked the venue we thought we would both be living in Canada, so it seemed a natural choice. We chose Sarnia Riding Club as our venue so we could be right next to the water. We knew that whatever continent we decided to do the wedding on, a lot of people who wouldn't be able to attend, we're so pleased that so many people made it – and we've promised to dance with those who didn't make it very soon."
