It’s not every day you see a wedding with a hot dog unity ceremony, a Lego bouquet, and a parade through a park. But for John and Cordelia, these moments were exactly what made their wedding colourful, quirky, and fun.

One of the most memorable twists came during the ceremony. Instead of a traditional unity ritual like lighting a candle or tying a knot, they went with a hot dog unity ceremony. Yes, a hot dog. With their officiant producing a Costco hot dog seemingly out of thin air, John added mustard while Cordelia applied ketchup and then they both took a bite, Lady and the Tramp style! “If you’re worried about forgetting to eat during your wedding day, schedule a mid-ceremony snack,” Cordelia laughed as she told us the story.

Following the ceremony, guests joined the couple for a parade through Crane Cove Park, the same park where John proposed. Cordelia’s mum, a natural at bringing people together, led the charge as Parade Marshal, organising a procession with streamers, noise-makers, bubbles, and drumming. “It was such a magical experience to walk through this park with our loved ones,” Cordelia said.

They then arrived at their reception, which was held at an oyster bar and grill restaurant on the water. Their escort cards were individually created Lego minifigs, made to look like each guest. These went down a storm and were an instant conversation starter.

Cordelia also carried a Lego flower bouquet and there were even more of them used as centrepieces on the tables. “I didn’t want to have real flowers (too fragrant), and John’s been a life-long Lego builder (not to brag, but one of his creations was featured in Lego Magazine when he was a kid!), so Lego flowers were the perfect choice for us”, she explained. “They ended up being more affordable than real florals and made for a great guest favour, too.” Cordelia spent many evenings scouring eBay and Facebook Marketplace for good deals on Lego botanical kits and assembling them while watching TV.

The couple also leaned into lots of DIY projects. Cordelia built their wedding website and designed the invitations, programmes, and thank you cards. The two of them also created the ceremony arch from PVC pipes, and fake foliage, and flowers.

After dinner, John switched into his wedding shorts and signature Chaco sandals, and the couple danced into the reception to the Seinfeld theme song. “It’s okay to be the main character on your wedding day!” Cordelia said when asked if they had any advice for other couples. “Obviously, don’t be a villain, but it’s okay to prioritise your needs. This is one of the few days in your life when people come together to celebrate you.”
