The inspiration for Nino and Basti’s wedding was their shared love for the underwater world, sea creatures, and the dreams they hold for the future. “We called our theme Seensucht nach Meer, which means ‘Longing for the Sea,’” Nino shared. “I’ve always loved sea creatures, and we both dream of retiring in Tenerife one day.” Their day, filled with DIY touches and small but meaningful moments, showed how intentional choices can transform even a civil ceremony into something unforgettable.
The couple set the tone early with a dress code that invited guests to embrace their theme. “Wow us in blue,” they told everyone—encouraging their loved ones to incorporate at least one blue item, whether shoes, clothes, or accessories. Nino opted for a blue prom dress, a much more affordable option to a traditional white one. “We also skipped the whole idea of a big wedding cake,” she said. “Instead, we had a buffet of different cakes for everyone and a small blue cake just for us. We didn’t even cut it. We just took a bite.”
Despite the civil ceremony’s usual brevity, theirs didn’t lack personality or charm. “Just before the ‘I do,’ Basti handed me a chocolate cookie,” Nino laughed. “When we first met, he didn’t offer me one, and I’ve been jokingly holding against him ever since. Giving it to me at the ceremony was his way of finally settling that debt!’”
Their under-the-sea-themed reception, held at Ring Cafe in Leipzig, showcased the couple’s DIY creativity. They spray-painted sea animal figurines and large shells in shades of blue and rose gold to tie the decor together. Shells served as name tags, and maritime accents filled the space. “Since it’s not a common theme for weddings, we couldn’t rely on pre-made decorations,” Nino said. “So, we had to get creative.”
One of the standout moments of the day came courtesy of Nino’s little sister, who dressed up as Sebastian the crab and danced to Under the Sea, channeling Nino’s love for The Little Mermaid. “That was one of the best moments. I didn’t expect it at all,” Nino recalled. “I am such a big fan of The Little Mermaid“. She also wore a custom denim jacket with Ariel on the back.
“Plan it the way you want, not how family and friends think it should be”, Nino concluded. “It’s your big day, not theirs.”
