When Alice and Amy envisioned their wedding day, they knew it wouldn’t fit neatly into tradition’s rigid mold. They wanted a day that reflected their love and individuality—one that embraced who they were as partners, best friends, and creatives. “We wanted a wedding that summed us up,” Alice said. “Alternative, but also personal. So much of the wedding industry isn’t designed with couples like us in mind.”
They began with the idea of a ‘Til Death and began collecting decor items around Halloween to fit that theme. However they did discover it was not so easy to find wedding bits specifically tailored to alternative same-sex couples, so for a lot of it they went down the DIY route. “When looking into pricing for custom alternative and same sex couple themed decor, we realised our options were very limited”, they explained. “We wanted to put our hearts and soul into it so after doing lots of research and scrolling, we decided that the best way we could have what we wanted was to make it ourselves. Amy designed and created everything (minus the wedding day invites).”
Their approach to tradition was unapologetically selective—keeping only what resonated with them and discarding the rest. They chose a BBQ over a sit-down dinner, skipped formal portraits, and instead leaned into spontaneity with a photo dash set to I Believe in a Thing Called Love by The Darkness. “Its an idea we found on TikTok”, Alice explained. “Pick a fun upbeat track and let the chaos unfold as you run around and get photos with everyone! It’s great fun.”
They also decided to get ready together. “Amy and I are best friends and we wanted to share every single minute of our special day together”, said Alice.”
The ceremony began with their ‘Flower Men’ wearing sunglasses and bum bags of confetti strutted down the aisle to Bob Seger’s Old Time Rock and Roll. Both bride’s then walked don the aisle to Beautiful With You by Halestorm. Their vows, written by themselves, were super emotional. Alice, still processing the recent loss of her mother, used her vows to express how Amy’s love had carried her through. Their son, who took his role as ring bearer very seriously, received a huge cheer from the crowd. After the ceremony, they slipped on their custom leather jackets and danced out to Shania Twain’s Man! I Feel Like a Woman.
The reception was all about fun and featured a disco for the kids followed by a full-blown lightsaber battle. Guests applied custom temporary tattoos (a major hit!) and every corner of the venue felt like an extension of Alice and Amy’s creativity.
Despite the challenges of doing it all themselves, they wouldn’t change a thing. “We hung a to-do list in the kitchen, and at first, it felt like we’d bitten off more than we could chew,” Amy admits. “But we tackled it piece by piece, and eventually, we realised we’d done it all. It made the day feel even more special.”
“There’s still a long way to go for same sex couples in the wedding industry,” Alice concluded.”We were lucky to find vendors like Alt Wedding Co, but the limited options made us realise there’s a gap in the market. Who knows, maybe one day we’ll start our own business to help fill it!”
