There have been some classic alt celeb weddings over the years—Gwen Stefani’s dip-dyed pink John Galliano dress changed my brain chemistry in 2002, and Avril Lavigne’s black Monique Lhuillier in 2013 made me wish I’d been brave enough to wear black for my own wedding. SJP also wore black when she eloped with Matthew Broderick in 1997, and who can forget Britney’s shotgun 55-hour marriage to Jason Alexander while wearing jeans and a baseball cap? Iconic behaviour.
Whatever their style, celebrity weddings usually become cultural phenomena. They set trends and serve as inspiration for nearlyweds planning their own nuptials in the years that follow. So, in honour of our 10th anniversary in print, I thought it would be fun to look back at some of the more recent alternative-leaning celeb weddings from the past decade. Did your favourite make the list?
2015: Mary-Kate Olsen and Olivier Sarkozy
Mary-Kate Olsen wed banker Olivier Sarkozy in 2015 in an intimate wedding at a private home in Manhattan. The couple reportedly had “bowls and bowls” of cigarettes for guests to enjoy. The famously private Olsen twins have never released any photos of the wedding, but you just know it would have been an rager!
2018: Kat Von D and Leafar Seyer
There was nothing at all conventional about Kat Von D’s wedding to Leafer ‘Prayers’ Sayer. The bride wore an all-red get up, from a Adolfo Sanchez dress and veil and to her custom antlers! To match the “en vida y en muerte” (in life and death) theme, the couple converted the Beverly Hills Hotel into heaven and hell. Guests arrived through an all-white room (heaven) with the ceremony and reception being in a red and black setting (hell). Obsessed.
2018: Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth
If there’s one thing Miley is going to do, it’s party hard and look incredible doing it. She wore a stunning Vivienne Westwood gown while Liam wore black suit paired with Vans. They had a small, private celebration with just family and close friends in Tennessee in December 2018.
2019: Christine Quinn and Christian Richard
Selling Sunset star Christine Quinn shocked the world when she opted to wear a black Galia Lahav as her wedding dress. Their winter wonderland meets gothic-inspired nuptials reportedly cost $1million and featured fake snow and real swans!
2020: Lily Allen and David Harbour
In a completely opposite kind of wedding, David Harbour and Lily Allen had a tiny elopement during the pandemic at Graceland Chapel in Las Vegas. An Elvis impersonator officiated the ceremony, and afterwards they went to In-N-Out Burger!
2021: Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton
You might think her dip-dyed pink John Galliano would be hard to beat, but Gwen Stefani went for a similarly awesome rock ‘n’ roll vibe for her second jaunt down the aisle in 2021.
She wore two gowns when she married Blake Shelton, both by Vera Wang. The first featured a high low tulle skirt which she accessorised with an embroidered veil, and then this absolutely incredible shortie for the party! The couple wed had an intimate at-home wedding at Shelton’s ranch in Tishomingo, OK.
2022: Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker
Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker actually had three different weddings. They flew to Vegas at 2am after the 2022 Grammys to privately exchange vows, but since they didn’t have a marriage license, it wasn’t legally recognised. Soon after they made things official at a Santa Barbara courthouse and later in the year, hosted an extravagant affair in Portofino, Italy—at Dolce & Gabbana’s private home. Both of them wore head to toe Dolce & Gabbana, too.
2023: Beanie Feldstein and Bonnie-Chance Roberts
Their summer camp-themed wedding was held at Cedar Lakes States in Hudson Valley, New York. The couple traded vows beneath a canopy of trees before a barn reception which featured all the things they love—images of their dogs, their childhood stuffed toys, and nods to their favourite restaurants. Beanie wore a long-sleeved lace dress while Bonnie-Chance was in a custom pink suit made, both by Gucci.
2023: Kat Dennings and Andrew W.K
Kat Dennings and Andrew W.K were bohemian style wedding was held in their own home in Los Angeles. The bride wore a vintage Alexander McQueen dress. They considered lots of options, from eloping somewhere to throwing a big, traditional wedding, but in the end, “the kitchen engagement moment kept calling back to us,” Dennings told Vogue. “We realised that a small home wedding was too cozy to resist. Plus, all our stuff was there so we wouldn’t have to pack anything.”
They planned and styled the whole day themselves, wanting it to be a far from an ‘industry event’ as it could be. We love that!!
2023: Chrishell Stause and G Flip
Chrishell Stause and G Flip married in secret in Las Vegas in May 2023. “Love doesn’t always go as planned…Sometimes it’s immeasurably better”, Chrishell told her Instagram followers. The couple actually plan to renew their vows every year, with their 2024 ceremony being in Australia over Chrishell’s birthday weekend. We can’t wait to see what this cute pair do next!
