Natasha and Jake’s love for all things retro is totally evident in their wedding. The couple, who renovated their home into a 1970s haven, decided to celebrate their wedding day in their own backyard, transforming it into an oasis reminiscent of a music festival.
The theme was a nod to the 1970s, complete with a DIY hanging record seating chart, vintage serving wear rentals and a retro dress code for their guests. Natasha embraced the vintage queen look with her puff-sleeved dress, a handmade bouquet from her mother and a fingertip veil. Jake stood out in a non-traditional white suit paired with a floral undershirt.
“Our theme was inspired by the warm, velvety smoothness of the 1970s”, Natasha told us. “It just speaks to both of us and our general style, so we immediately agreed that would be cool. We invited everyone to dress up in retro fare and we had a blast.”
Hosting the wedding at home allowed them to pour the money they would have spent on a venue into their beloved fixer-upper. The ceremony, set under a large archway of trees in their garden, featured easy listening 1970s music. Their vows – a mix of poetry, short stories and lots of laughs – were officiated by Natasha’s cousin. The ceremony ended with a spin, dip and a kiss, followed by birdseed confetti thrown by the guests.
The reception was blast and a blur. Perfect weather, a brief rain to break the humidity, and a warm, beautiful evening filled with laughter, love and delicious food. Natasha and Jake, known for their love of dancing, spent most of the night on the dance floor, getting funky and having the time of their lives.
DIY projects were also big part of their wedding. They designed and set up the entire layout with the help of friends and family. Jake’s dad and friends built custom bars, his mum created photo collages, Natasha’s mum arranged the flowers and a family friend helped with the landscaping. The seating chart was a creative masterpiece of old records and copper wire.
“Walking down the aisle and seeing all the collective hard work of so many people for almost a year come together for a day that surpassed our expectations in every way was the best part of the wedding”, Natasha said. “As was marrying the love of my life. There are so many moving parts all having to come together so quickly all at once and we did struggle with trying not to worry about pleasing everyone else. But in the end, it was our day and we’re so happy with how it turned out.”
