It’s sometimes difficult to remember a time when seeing genders other than female wearing dresses or skirts was unheard of. Although in recent times we’ve seen celebrities like Harry Styles and Brad Pitt jumping on board, the queer community have been experimenting with gender in fashion for decades! I mean, the rest of the world is really just catching up.
For photographer Stori O-Foley, who came up with the concept and shot this editorial, having one of her grooms in a wedding dress was the main thing she wanted to do. She wanted something sleek, with a cape, which suited the model’s personality and showed off his best features.
She told us all about her inspo. “Wow, so much went into conceptualising this shoot. I really wanted to push the unconventional in every way. I wanted to show that your wedding or elopement should represent who YOU are as a couple, not necessarily what is traditional.”
“I truly believe in capturing the real connection between a couple on the day that showcases their love. I’ve found the best way to do this is to represent what that means to you through every detail. I also really wanted to push a masculine feel to this shoot since I see so much femininity around weddings. I really wanted a bold, strong, gay couple to change the conventional and I found that with my friends Kyle and Kevin.”
“Showcasing plants instead of florals and the dress instead of a suit, were also two things that I was very adamant on. We called this set Lush + Leather because I wanted it to come off as rich, earthy and bold. I thrifted some pieces and wanted everything to be unique to really hone into the theme. I am so beyond thrilled with every vendor’s efforts in this shoot. They all truly made a vision come to life.”
“It’s your day, do YOU. To me, Rock n Roll is going against the grain, doing the non-traditional and representing yourself. Don’t do it because it’s edgy or non conforming, do it because it’s what you want! Wear that dress, have those plants, eat that chocolate…. just enjoy your day and bask in your love!”
