The theme for Juli and Cody’s wedding was very easy for them to choose – comic book superheros! They were married in July at the bride’s parent’s home.
“We are both super nerdy”, explained Juli. “We both have a love for video games, board games, table top games, Dungeons and Dragons and comics! We decided that we didn’t want our wedding to look like every other wedding and that it needed to be something that fit our quirky personalities. We decided on comic books, especially after I figured out how to make flowers out of comics.”
“We wanted it to still feel like a classy wedding, but wanted to subtlety include comics and superheroes wherever we could. We also decided not to have one maid of honour or best man. Every girl and guy in the wedding was considered a best man or maid of honour because we are best friends with all of them and we’re a really tight knit group of friends.”
Each bridal party member was allocated a different superhero and the attention to detail was immense! “Blue was Superman, yellow was Ironman, green was Green Arrow, and red was Deadpool. Myself and Cody were Batman and incorporated both yellow and black accents. The girls’ shoes were decoupaged with superhero fabric and the earrings were made by me out of corresponding comics. Their bouquets/ boutonnieres were also made of corresponding comics and coloured paper.”
The bride opted to wear black to be non-traditional but also to suit the Batman theme of her outfit. “I went with a black dress instead of the traditional white. I’ve never been comfortable in white, and black is my happy colour. I felt beautiful. We also wanted to wedding to feel really relaxed and laid back.”
“It was in my parents’ backyard in July, so we really wanted a cookout or fourth of July yard party kind of feel. We didn’t have a dress code for guests and wanted people to be as comfortable as possible since it would be in the July heat. I think we nailed our relaxed, nerdy, classy look. I was really pleased with how the wedding aesthetic turned out.”
All of the decor was made by the couple or their friends. “Each table had comic book hero biography that was researched and typed up by me. The graphic design of the photos was done by a friend, Megan. The flowers that decorated the tables were also handmade by me and and army of friends the week before the wedding. They took SO long to make, but the end results were so worth it! I made all of the table numbers by decoupaging comic books as well. Luckily I have a lot of friends who read comics and were willing to give me their old ones that aren’t worth a lot of money to use for the craft parts of the wedding!”
“We had so much fun planning our comic book wedding”, she concluded. “I got to read comics and learn more about obscure heroes that we incorporated as table biography centrepieces. I even discovered new favourite superheroes based on their origin stories that I had never known before. I think my absolute favourite part was deciding which superheroes to incorporate in the bridal party. We messaged the best men and asked them to list their top five favourite superheroes. Based on who answered first, got first dibs. We also took into consideration the colour scheme so that colours weren’t repeated based on which hero they chose.”
“We would tell other couples to just DO YOU! Don’t allow anyone to dictate how, when, or where you run your day. It’s YOUR day. Be true to yourself. The more you let yourself shine through on your day, the more memorable and fun it will be. Your guests will notice too. We had so many compliments on our wedding because you could tell it was us and you could see our happiness shine through in all the fun we had.”
