Heather and Kev’s wedding was full of quirky little DIY touches. They didn’t want it to feel too orchestrated though; they just wanted it to feel natural and homemade. “After spending weeks and weeks reading through the brilliant Rock n Roll Bride blog, I decided on a bright theme with a 1950s twist”, said Heather. “We wanted to keep things DIY too, with no massive styling required. We wanted it to feel like we’d done everything ourselves and that it was authentically ‘us’.”
“Our friends helped us with lots of things. My maid of honour spent hours punching heart shaped holes into tissue paper for the table confetti, and endless time making the table plans! She was my saviour during the whole wedding process. The pom poms were made by my mum and the flowers were arranged by my godmother. We made the glitter letters and stationery ourselves too.”
The ceremony was help at Boconnoc Church in Cornwall. It was a very important part of the day for them. “The most emotional moment was receiving my grandmother’s wedding ring as my own”, she explained. “My grandma passed away when I was 9, and she was my world. When it came to the part of the ceremony to exchange rings, our best man walked over to my Grandfather who then kissed the box and gave it to him. There was not dry eye anywhere! Polperro Fisherman’s Choir also made our ceremony really special. They raised the roof as they sung the hymns and everyone said how incredible they were.”
Heather wore an amazing Candy Anthony dress and veil with shoes from Nine West. “The biggest splurge was on my dress!” she said. “After trying on loads of standard wedding gowns, I felt like the female version of the Incredible Hulk! Rachel at Candy Anthony was fabulous and made sure the dress suited me as a ‘fuller figure’ bride. We made a huge saving on the bridesmaid dresses though because they were made by my great aunt who is 82 years old!”
“The only thing I would change about our wedding is that I would have liked to have had a wedding planner to help us run the day”, Heather concluded. “Having a DIY wedding is one thing, but trying to do everything yourself, it can be very stressful on the actual day. It’s also hard to take it all in when you’re running around trying to organise everything.”
