As you read this I’ll be jetting off to Prague to spend a few days with the amazing Japanese fashion blogger La Carmina! We’ve have chatted online for about 4-5 years (!) and so I’m super psyched to finally meet her in real life…It’s been so exciting to see how both our blogs and brands have evolved since we first ‘met’ and so I’m sure we’ll have lots to talk about…plus we both share a penchant for Japan, cats, crazy nails and decoden! And hello, we’ll be in Prague!! Exclamation mark overload!!!

I’ll be sure to report back on our goings on when I return.

Oh… also a quickie to say thank you to everyone who booked onto the Midland’s School of Rock. Unbelievably the workshop sold out in just 8 hours (the fastest selling yet!) I know many of you were disappointed to not nab a spot, but fret not, there will be more dates announced soon. Just be sure to keep your ears to the ground and your eyes on twitter/the blog for further dates!

OK so here’s some of the other things that have been occupying my mind this week…

♥ The Wiksten S/S 2012 collection looks cool, casual and comfortable. Perfect!
♥ Loving this new blog all about pretty party planning ideas!

A Dark Circus Inspiration Shoot

May 31, 2012

How do you feel about a dark circus wedding theme? Spooky but romantic, creepy but intriguing – this shoot is sure to divide opinions which is why I love it!

Coordinated by San Francisco based Asiel Design and photographed by the fabulous Caroline of Tinywater, this shoot is an epic collection of talent and ingenious ideas. From the dramatic lighting to the opulent florals, this is a style I’d love to see inspire some real life weddings.

A Brazilian Restaurant Wedding: Rebecca & Gabriel

May 31, 2012

Rebecca & Gabriel’s Canadian wedding took place in November. Toronto City Hall hosted their ceremony, and they selected Caju Restaurant for a low key and casual reception. Gabriel is from Brazil so the cuisine of the restaurant provided a nod to his family and heritage.

“Gabriel and I met online, and deleted our dating profiles after our first date,” Rebecca told me. “We moved in together after a month of dating and knew we were going to get married. We both just knew we had finally met the right one, and something about the way we worked together just made complete sense! He is from Brazil, living in Canada and I moved to Toronto to meet people. None of Gabriel’s family was able to come to Canada for our wedding, so we had our small 30 guest reception at an authentic Brazilian Restaurant so we would at least incorporate Brazil through the amazing food.”

“On the day of the wedding Gabriel drove his scooter for 45 minutes to get our big red balloon. It was the only ‘task’ I had given him to take care of, and to get it home from where he found it he tied it to the back of his scooter and drove it back home! It is currently still with air in it (barely!) in our house. We loved that red balloon! He also forgot his wedding ring on the day of the wedding, and had to zip home on his scooter, and battle rush hour gridlocked traffic to get to City Hall on time!”

The bride opted for a short white dress from Fashion Crimes instead of a traditional wedding dress, and with it she teamed a vintage fur wrap and a homemade headpiece. “I made my own birdcage veil, very simply from a website I found online”, the bride continued. “I decorated all of our floral mason jars with mismatched lace and fabric (from my own personal stash!) I made drink straw banners and cupcake bunting and hand stamped our envelopes, made our invitations, and of course made all of my own flowers! I’ve been a florist for over 10 years, so it was very important to me to do that.”

A New York State of Mind: West Village Wanderers

May 30, 2012

After the exertion of jumping around the rooftop, Gala & I decided a much more leisurely pace was required for the second part of our day. So we hopped in a cab with the Made You Look girls and headed towards the uber trendy West Village.

Oh and yes that is me… and no I didn’t have a quick dye job in between! I bought this sky blue wig on a whim from Stargazer when I was purchasing my regular round of baby pink dye. The hair is fake but considering it only cost me a tenner I think it actually looked pretty good! I have plans to buy it in other colours too… I’ll wear them when I feel like going incognito!

What could be more NYC than a West Village stoop? We did find Carrie’s (yes, the actual one they used when filming the outside scenes in Sex and the City) but there was a chain across it with a polite warning to stay off (!) However the road itself was pretty deserted traffic-wise so we had another little dance/pose-off in the middle of the street. I’d like to think SJP probably did the same thing in between takes…

A few of you were asking after I published part one of the shoot, which camera’s the girls use…well I asked Christina and she said, “For the shoot we shot on Contax 645, Contax G1, Hasselblad 500 cm, Polaroid Land Camera 330, Canon AE-1, Pentax 35mm, Canon 5D Mark II DSLR (2 of them – one for filming & one for shooting), Instax wide….& 3 iphones haha!”

I Wore

Topshop Cutout Back Self Stripe Flippy dress
♥ Kimchi Blue black & glitter shoes boots / Jimmy Choo Tokyo hi tops
Stargazer ‘Japan’ wig in ‘Sky’
♥ Sparkle & Fade Skull Cardigan

Gala Wore

Topshop sequin dress
♥ Custom decoden glasses by Luxyloli on etsy
♥ Star headband by Janine Basil on etsy

The Inspirations: Elsie Larson of A Beautiful Mess/Red Velvet

May 30, 2012

Following on from chatting to one of my favourite bloggers last week, I thought I’d follow suit with this edition of The Inspirations and speak to another incredibly inspiring blogger. Although calling Elsie Larson mearly a ‘blogger’ is doing her a huge disservice and is an understatement of epic proportions! She is a multifaceted business woman with mad skills. A master of multi-tasking she, alongside her sister and business partner Emma, runs a hugely successful blog (which current gets over 170,000 views a day!), owns a vintage clothing boutique, an online shop (where they sell their own line of dresses!)..oh she’s also currently writing her first book! Way to make us feel lazy superwoman.

It was really interesting to rummage around in the mind of Elsie. I hope you enjoy reading our chat as well.

Hi Elsie, I’m so excited to have you in the Green Room today! Could you introduce yourself?

I’m Elsie from A Beautiful Mess. My sister, Emma, and I own a local vintage boutique and run our blog as our full time job. I also design dress lines a few times each year… never a dull moment!

I started my blog five years ago with no particular aspirations, except to share the random photos I was taking each day. If I could go back in time and give myself a little advice I’d say to keep an open mind and try anything once! Currently, I’m wrapping up work on the very first A Beautiful Mess book, due out in 2013.

Your blog is only one part of your business but its exceptionally popular. How do you feel it compliments the other areas of your business and do you have any tips or advice for people with businesses that want to use blogging and social media to enhance their brand?

Great question! I really believe that blogging has to come from it’s own creative place. Blogs that are based solely on promoting a business can be one dimensional and often lack a strong voice. My advice for business owners who want to start a blog is to explore all your options. Just because you want to promote your business doesn’t mean that’s all you can do. Try anything that interests you! For example I follow the brand Fossil’s blog and it is a fun read. They blog about so much more than just their own products and I think that’s something that I enjoy in any brand’s blog.

What do you think are the biggest mistakes business owners who blog make and how would you encourage them to remedy this?

I think that blogging about their own goods too much is the biggest mistake I see. Any business is wise to create a lifestyle resource that their target customers can enjoy, not just a feed of new products. There are so many ways to educate customers about your products without just “selling” them. For example, each time we launch a dress collection I spend a couple weeks creating “3 Ways To Wear It” features for each dress. These features work because they do sell my designs, but readers who aren’t interested in buying can enjoy them still while learning little styling tips!

What do you think makes a good blogger? Do you see any emerging trends in what makes some bloggers phenomenally well read and successful while others struggle to attract readers? What do you think separates the successes from the mediocre?

I think being original is really important. I could talk all day about that but the bottom line is that blogs that imitate other blogs are really only selling themselves short.

The Minecraft Wedding: Matt & Asia

May 30, 2012

Confession: I can’t take any of the credit for finding this wedding…this baby was aaaaall Gareth’s doing! I’m quite the Minecraft widow actually, and when I drag myself from my computer to my bed at night I can often hear him watching the latest Yogscast video (at full volume of course!) Needless to say he’s a bit of a fan… So when the creator of Minecraft, Markus Persson (known online as ‘Notch’), tweeted about a wedding themed around the game, Gareth was straight away begging me to try and feature it. In fact I’ve never seen him run into my office so fast “Ooohmiiigaaaawd there’s a Minecraft wedding! You HAVE to feature it! Pleeeease! Pleeeeeeeeease! How do you not know about this already!?? This is the coolest wedding ever ever ever!”

Luckily, it turned out the photographers who shot it are friends of the blog (veteran readers will remember them from their epic ‘Up’ themed anniversary shoot) and so they were more than thrilled to share it with us. HURRAH! I hope you fellow gamers will get as much joy out of this as Gareth has!

Matt & Asia’s Minecraft wedding theme was pretty much a given, considering how Matt proposed…

“My proposal was a complete fluke,” the groom explained. “Asia really wanted to go to MineCon, as it was the first ever convention for Minecraft, a game we both played and loved. I wanted to propose to her there, but had no idea how I would do it. Being someone with plenty of video production experience, I sent an email to the team (who I supported on Kickstarter) who were filming a documentary about Mojang (the game developer behind Minecraft), as I knew they would be there at the big event. I simply told them I planned on proposing, and that it might make good B-roll for their film if they wanted to plan on being there when I did it. One thing led to another, and my email was sent up to the person running the entire event; Lydia Winters, known as ‘minecraftchick’ by the nerd masses. She completely set up the entire deal, which involved Mojang’s artist creating custom Minecraft labels for Jones Soda, who was sponsoring the event. The video ended up having over 200k views on YouTube!”

So, the couple set to work painstakingly planning their Minecraft themed wedding. “Asia and I have always been the kind of people that enjoy going against the flow, “Matt continued. “We have weird senses of humor and we both are part of growing ‘cool nerd’ culture in the world. As in, people who enjoy computers, video games, and other ‘geeky’ hobbies, but that still have full social lives, enjoy exercising and being outdoors, and in general don’t look much different than ‘normal’ (non-nerd) people. Minecraft is a cultural phenomenon, for nerds and non-nerds alike, and it’s a game that I played very early on, during the alpha stages of the game. When I re-friended Asia, and found that she loved video games as much – if not more – than I do, I showed her the game. She instantly fell in love, and the game became a great source of bonding early in our relationship. You are literally exploring an unknown world that you have to mine, grow, harvest, and craft in. You want tools? Find the wood or stone to make them. Want a house to protect you from bad creatures that come in the night? You have to find the materials to build a house, whether it’s melting sand to form glass, finding clay to roast into bricks. It’s the kind of game that requires a lot of teamwork, from hunting food while the other grows crops, or defending your home from invaders while the other runs to the basement! We clicked in the game as well as we clicked outside it, and it became a regular part of daily life to explore and discover new things in Minecraft as we did the same in our real lives.”

“Others have described the wedding as ‘just as nerdy as it was classy’, and that’s exactly what we were going for. The Minecraft statues, trees, plants, cave, and other props were taken directly from the game. We knew that not everyone at the wedding would have played the game, and we also knew that we didn’t want the location to feel like a cheesy amusement park or something. The location, Beatnik Studios, already has a very earthy look to it, with it’s brick walls and polished brown floors, so we decided to continue that ‘natural’ theme from Minecraft by using greens and browns, and other earthy tones to bring out a natural look to the decorations. I have to give huge props to my Aunt, who has been an incredible florist and decorator at her business, Jackie’s Flowers for many years. As someone without prior knowledge of the game, she was still able to bring things to life with very natural ingredients, such as the ‘grass blocks’ on the tables, and the incredible mushroom and moss piece she made from scratch for our wedding table. While we took care of the boxes, statues and other props directly from the game, she worked her magic to bring the theme into reality with real plants. Quite simply, her and her daughter (my cousin) did a brilliant job.”

The Minecraft characters and animal statues were created by Greg Aronowitz for MineCon. After the epic proposal, Greg kindly allowed them to borrow them for the wedding. He even allowed them to take the fully functional torches with working ‘fire’ and LED lights.

Jones Soda, who sponsored MineCon, also donated all 250 bottles of custom labelled drinks for the wedding. “Sure, they sponsored MineCon, but we were going to be ordering over $600 worth of bottles, not including shipping,” Matt explained. “That was a massive blessing, and one of the reasons we wanted to make absolutely sure their goods were shown off in the pictures! Also, because the bottles look absolutely awesome!”

“The success of this wedding was completely based on the hard work out countless friends, artists, and family,” Matt concluded. “I’ve had many ideas in my life that have not turned to be half as good as I thought in my head. This one turned out far better than I could have ever imagined, and it’s all due to the creative talent of friends who helped with planning and setup, an amazing pair of florists, a phenomenal location, a groundbreaking video game, and the best two photographers in Sacramento and beyond. We couldn’t be happier with the results, and we are proud to share it with the world!”

A Dramatic Gothic Wedding: Suzy & Dimtry

May 29, 2012

Suzy & Dimtry gothic wedding was anything but traditional. They wanted their day to reflect them but also to have fun with it. Suzy told me all about it as well as sharing some of her favourite details, “We wanted our wedding to reflect who we are as people. So you can definitely say it was not very traditional. Our cake was inspired by a Charlie the Unicorn episode, and we added their own twist by having our cake bleed as we cut into it. My favorite animal of all time is the pot bellied pig, and I wanted nothing more than to have one bring out our wedding band. Keeping as far away from tradition, we also hired a beautiful contortionist to entertain down the isle instead of a trail of bridesmaids and groomsmen.”

Suzy wore a stunning black and white wedding dress by Max Chaoul. The skirt was removable so she could have a short dress for the evening! “I wore a black and white lace gown that had a removable bottom half to flip it into a cocktail dress for dancing. Dimitry wore a black and red gothic inspired tux with tails to the floor.”

“The ceremony was performed by an actor dubbing The Princess Bride ‘Mawage is whot bwings us twogweda..’ speech thru-out the whole ceremony,” she continued. “We had already eloped in Vegas, so we were legally married and able to hire an actor instead of a priest.”

“We are also very fond of Jagermeister…so we had a couple of Jager fountains flowing all over the venue. The night ended with a surprise performance by a mini Kiss cover band. It blew everything out of the water.

A New York State of Mind: Rooftop Dance Party

May 28, 2012

I’ve been obsessed with Made You Look Studios for as long as I’ve been blogging. Even in the early days they were wonderful to me and allowed me to feature their beautiful weddings as much as possible. Christina, Marielle & Alie are amazing girls, and when Christina and I started whimsically chatting about one day doing a shoot together I knew we’d make it happen somehow!

Fast forward a few years and the opportunity for me to travel to New York for a shoot with a make up company arose. I was over the moon and even more so when they said the Made You Look girls were shooting it! I think it took me approximately 20 seconds to reply and say I was 100% on board. Unfortunately these things don’t always pan out and the shoot was cancelled a few weeks before I was due to fly out. I was disappointed but I thought, hell, I’m going to New York now anyway and I wanna shoot with these girls damnit! So I emailed them to ask if they still wanted to come to New York (they are based in Bakersfield, CA) and shoot with me & Gareth and then me & Gala! I was overjoyed when they agreed. I’m a firm believer that things always happen for a reason and now we had completely free reign to create the shoot(s) of our dreams!

The day began with make up by the fabulous Regan. He works for MAC and is awesome at what he does. Plus, when he asked if I wanted to try pink eyebrows I knew we were onto a winner! Gala went for a more 60s inspired look while I opted for my trademark bright pink lips to match my brows!

For our first look we decided to head up to the windswept rooftop of our East Village apartment (Gareth & I decided to rent an apartment during our stay instead of booking a hotel. I loved it and the fact that we were in a non-tourist area, it almost felt like we were living there for 2 weeks!)

So, what do Gala & I do when we’re excited to be hanging out again? We pull silly faces and have impromptu dance parties of course! The elevators of Vegas were our practice run, but now the rooftop was our place to shine! Oh boy it was windy up there but I think you’ll agree it was worth it for these shots.

The Made You Look girls are masters of the camera…no, strike that…masters of a gazillion cameras! Each of them carried about 4 cameras each, and as we shot they were constantly changing up and shooting with a different one. Each camera had a different kind of film in it so all the shots are totally different. If you love vintage-looking photographs then these are the girls for you. No fake vintage photoshop edits here people, these are the real deal!

I Wore

♥ Nanette Lepore Jacy Pleated Floral-Print Skirt (seriously the brightest thing I’ve ever owned!)
Zara t-shirt
♥ Upper Street Ballet Flats (designed by me!)
♥ Sparklebeast on etsy (Gala’s)
H&M ring
♥ Forever 21 bangles

Gala Wore

♥ Vintage dress
♥ Bunny ears from a toy shop in New Zealand
♥ Michael Kors watch
♥ Forever 21 bangles
♥ Betsey Johnson ‘Starburst Polly’ shoes

PS: I told you things got a little bit silly…

Brand New Date for the School of Rock Workshop: West Midlands!

May 28, 2012

It’s that time again…time to announce a brand new School of Rock date and venue!

The next event will be taking place on Thursday 28th June 2012 at Curradine Barns in Shrawley, Worcestershire (about 50 minutes drive from Birmingham). The 4 hour workshop will be from 1.30pm-5.30pm (no early mornings thank you very much!) and afterwards you’re all invited to have food, drinks and more blogging chats with Gareth & me over a complementary meal being put on by the Curradine Barns team!

The workshop is all about the art of blogging. Most of the topics discussed will have relevance for anyone who has a blog, whether you’re wanting to be a professional blogger, someone who blogs to support their business (i.e. you’re a wedding photographer/stationer/caterer with a blog) or you just want to blog for fun! The course isn’t specifically aimed at people with wedding-related blogs although most of the examples (and secrets!) I share will probably be related to the wedding industry.

The course will cover the following topics:

♥ How I started Rock n Roll Bride and built readership (and tips on how you can do the same) ♥ Finding your own voice and showcasing your personality ♥ Knowing what to blog about and finding inspiration ♥ Leveraging social media ♥ How I turned my blog into a full time business, advertising and how to make money from your blog ♥ Branding and thinking about yourself as a brand ♥ How to get featured on professional wedding blogs ♥ Dealing with the not so nice bits of blogging ♥ Plenty of time for your questions…

An Elegant & Eclectic North London Wedding: Tommy & Emma

May 28, 2012

Tommy & Emma were married at Stoke Newington Town Hall, with a reception at the amazing The Roost in Dalston, London. Far from a traditional wedding venue, it often plays host to TV or film crews and provided a really unique and quirky setting for their celebration. “Our wedding was homemade & eclectic”, Emma explained “elegant with rough edges… a bit like us!”

“It was really important to us that our guests felt part of the day and felt included,” she continued. “Instead of place names we found photographs of everyone from our personal collection of people over the years. We hoped that this would also spark conversation between guests that might not know each other very well. We also wrote everyone letters to thank you for coming on the day and with a special memory of our time together. Before the ceremony we gave each guest a outline of the day, so that everyone knew what was happening and when people were going to eat/drink and dance!”

“It was also so important that everyone knew how much we appreciated them being there. We wanted our wedding to reflect us, but also how other people have shaped our lives along the way. We pretty much did everything ourselves (with the help of our family!) We had homemade jams, chutneys and lemon curd on the tables as favours. This was a real triumph as everyone loves a bit of homemade jam! We also spent the whole year collecting cups and saucers, plates, side plates for our wedding breakfast. We handmade the table plan to look like bunting. Also, as emotions often run high at weddings we decided to screen print our invitations directly onto lots of different beautifully embroidered cotton handkerchiefs that we had collected.”

DIY Tutorial: T-Shirt Bunting

May 26, 2012

Bunting is still an incredibly popular decor idea for weddings this year, so I thought a super simple and quick DIY tutorial would probably help a lot of you out! Thank you to blog reader Erin for putting this together for us. You can see more of her DIY ideas over on her own blog Little Red Riding Hood. If you are doing DIY projects for your own wedding and fancy submitting a tutorial idea, just drop me an email with a brief outline and some photos and we can chat! OK, over to Erin…(nice feather boa hat by the way!)

I grew up in country Victoria, but moved to inner bayside Melbourne to be with my partner after returning from some amazing adventures living overseas. In everyday life, I work as a five-star hotel sales executive and event manager. This sounds glamorous, but mostly consists of lists and finding the right length trestle table (usually at 5:30pm on a Friday…) When I’m not riding my vintage bike or sipping third-wave coffee with the hipsters in South Melbourne, I like to garden and read. I also like to bake and craft, but sometimes these things don’t work so well for me – I recently worked out that I can excuse these “experiments” by blogging them!

Supplies Needed:

♥ Old t-shirts, or any material, really (Check the off-cut bin at your local op-shop!)
♥ Lace or ribbon for edging
♥ Sharp scissors
♥ Ruler, pen and paper

Method:

Step One: Prepare your material. Inspired by the t-shirt bunting made from David Fleck’s designs I saw a while back, I dug out some old t-shirts and material scraps I have hoarded saved.  You may need to allow an extra hour or so of time to do the digging – I found some lovely gold and plum material that I didn’t know I had.

Then I found a feather boa (er….four father boas, actually…) put it on and tied a yellow scarf around my head.

Some of the t-shirts I’ve worn and worn and had to retire but one was an obnoxious neon colour I bought from JayJays back when I paid to go to festivals like Big Day Out.

Because I didn’t intend to make a great deal of bunting, I simply chopped out the bits of the t-shirts that I liked, and didn’t worry about the rest of the shirt.  They’ve gone into a rag-bag to stuff felt flowers with or something involving buttons.

Step Two: Create your pattern. I tried a diamond shape cut-out, thinking I’d fold in half and edge the triangles. After I did one, I decided I couldn’t really be bothered to do edging on these particular bunts (I don’t care if that’s not the singular word for bunting, I’m using it anyway).

A Soft & Feminine Día de los Muertos Shoot

May 25, 2012

“Almost 2 years ago I saw a beautiful Día de los Muertos painting”, photographer Ashley Forrette writes. “It was the first time I really looked at anything Day of the Dead-related that was not a kitschy nicknack or halloween costume sold at Hot Topic, but actually a really beautiful piece of art. It was soft, and feminine, and dark… romantic even. I fell in love and immediately I knew I wanted to someday shoot a bridal photo session inspired by that painting.”

After some big plans that were nigh-on impossible to pull off, Ashley decided to just keep the shoot simple and make it happen! “The ideas I had for it in my head were too grand and overwhelming to actually think about pulling off. I wanted to go to the desert during a windstorm, I wanted a $7000 dress, and a herd of wild horses… etc. etc. All things that seemed too big to coordinate for a shoot without a budget and for no real reason other than fun. One morning I woke up and realized not doing the shoot just because it couldn’t be as big as my imagination wouldn’t help me at all. It wasn’t a good excuse anymore. Why not do the shoot here in Portland with what I have and try to make it the best I can with my available resources? Why not start somewhere and see where it goes? Why not go for it, just for the experience, for the process, and for creativity rather than letting the fear of failure keep me from doing anything at all?”

And so she did. She pulled together an incredible team of creatives (credited at the bottom of this post) and made her dream become a reality. I love it!

Why You Should Offer an Album

As a wedding photographer, are you including an album with every package that you offer clients? I didn’t used to but I have recently changed this so that I do.

It’s been a huge few years for wedding photography. The arrival of affordable digital SLRs have of course impacted massively on how many people now offer their services as wedding photographers. It feels like a buyers market a lot of the time as anyone looking to book a wedding photographer in the UK has a huge amount of us to choose from. Potential clients are often putting their demands in at the initial enquiry stage instead of waiting to see what you offer.  As an extreme example, I had this in my inbox a while back…

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to you regarding a wedding taking place on XX of XXXXXX 2012.

If you are available for this date, I have a bride and groom looking for a photographer to capture a full day. They are, however, on an extremely tight budget.  The absolute maximum they may be able to stretch to, would be £400 for the total costings. The wedding is in XXXX Church with the reception to follow, down the road. It was originally planned that a friend would be photographing the events of the day, but it has recently come to light that this may not now be possible.

Ideally they are looking for the following:
2 Photographers
Coverage from preparation to first dance
Full copyright of all pictures
An Album

Needless to say I responded with ‘Dear Sir/Madam, thanks for your truly delightful email but I am busy for that day, in fact that whole year.’ I have also had lots of enquiries that state “We don’t need an album as we will be doing our own”. Of course if you are including the high resolution files in their package then they are very welcome to. But check up on those clients a year or even two down the line and see if they ever made that album. Or go back through your weddings and look at who was definitely going to order an album from you and see if they ever did. In the planning stages of a wedding, a few hundred pounds on an album to proudly display your wedding day can seem perfectly reasonable in the grand scheme of things. However after the wedding, when maybe the washing machine breaks down or they start to think about having a family, that chunk of money on a wedding album can now seem like quite a lot to find. Two thirds of couples overspend significantly on their wedding budget and often take quite some time to pay it all off. As photographers you will find that more often than not you will be missing the window of opportunity on providing a wedding album.

A Homemade Tipi Wedding in Wales: Nathan & Laura

May 25, 2012

When I get wedding submissions like Nathan & Laura’s I’m literally bursting at the seams to get them published. So sometimes I sneakily share a picture or two on my facebook page. The shot I shared of Nathan’s reaction when seeing his bride walking down the aisle totally encompassed this awesome wedding. And it would appear you guys loved it too – over 200 likes and I didn’t even show you the stunning bride! Well the wait is over my friends, I’m sure you’ll agree it was worth it and that his face was 100% justified. Just look at her!

After proposing with a ‘Laura will you marry me?’ tattoo (!) the couple got to planning their wedding for earlier this month. The celebration was held at Penybanc Farm, hosted by Welsh Green Weddings, and the relaxed vibe of the farm really set the tone for the whole day.

“We had a marquee which was put up by made by Roger, Simone and team at Welsh Green Weddings“, the couple explained. “We then added our own personal touches including bunting made by the Mother of the bride and hearts on line made by both our Mothers and the groom’s daughters. Our wishing tree was made by the Mother of the bride and the cake stand was made by Laura. We had individual homemade ‘plant pot’ cakes too. We had tea cups and saucers for favours which we collected from car boots and charity shops. The bridal bouquet was made out of of vintage buttons and featured items from both our grandmothers, Edelweiss (Austrian relatives) and the Father of the bride’s numbers from his police uniform. As Nathan proposed to Laura with a ‘Laura will you marry me?’ tattoo, we also had temporary tattoos as favours and both of us had our own ‘secret tattoos’ on the day.”

“Think about the kind of people you are and who you are going to invite” the couple advised when I asked them what influenced their wedding, “in our case we knew that around a third of the guests would be under 12, so a venue where children and their parents could feel relaxed and excited was important to us. Being true to your self is vital and having some sort of connection with the people running the venue as well as a faith in their professionalism helps enormously. For us, when we went to see Simone and Roger at Pennybanc we knew we were on the same wavelength.”

“A professional photographer is also totally worth the money” they continued. “The married couples we spoke to who hadn’t had one said it was their only regret from their own weddings. If you can, budget with them at the centre and book them early on. Nicola from Daffodil Waves Photography was amazing.”

“Don’t get too hung up on being original”, they concluded. “Wedding blogs and magazines are great to help you think about things and give inspiration, but they can also be intimidating and make you feel that your ideas are ‘old hat’. It ebbs and flows so don’t compete. We both like Elvis and vintage style so it was inevitably going to feature in the music and look of the day, but we didn’t want it to be to ‘themed’. We wanted to have a structure to the day but it also had to have enough flexibility in it to to deal with overruns and the unexpected…and we wanted unexpected things to happen!”

Oooh I wonder where our sparkly pink tour bus will be taking us next?

So what have I been up to for the rest of the week? Well mainly researching Thursday Treats it would seem. Oh it’s a hard life!

Can using different types of models benefit brands – a really interesting piece investigating the fashion industry’s obsession with only using young, skinny and (more often than not) white models and why this could be hindering sales.

A 1920s Speakeasy Carnival Themed Wedding: Emily & Jesse

May 24, 2012

Vintage themes aren’t always my bag, but throw a 1920s carnival idea at me and I go weak at the knees! A strong theme like this, done really really well, gets me very excited indeed.

Emily & Jesse were married at The Voorhies Mansion at Edenvale Winery. It provided the perfect canvas for their creative ideas! “I would encourage anyone planning a wedding to use wedding tradition as a springboard and focus on the experience you want your guests taking away from your event,” newlywed Emily told me. “My husband and I went through the traditional wedding/reception order and activities and then changed what didn’t work for us. Everything was a conscious choice from writing the hilarious ceremony with our officiant to deciding to have four bouquets which I presented to my mom, MIL and grandmothers. Once we knew what we wanted we could be very clear with all of our vendors about our ideas and every single one of them bent over backwards to help make it happen. Our guests still tell us it was the most fun, memorable wedding they’ve ever been to and that is exactly what we were going for.”

The speakeasy carnival theme was everywhere – from the homemade stationery, to the food, to the performers. “We have many talented friends and family who contributed performances that totally made the party,” Emily continued. “My sister sang old jazz standards before and during the ceremony, and friends performed our wedding ceremony, performed aerial silks during dinner, taught the Charleston to our guests, fire danced or played the part of a fortune teller, flapper or mime. True Love Sound not only took care of music but were great MCs and with their help we made a silent movie reenacting how me met… it was totally hilarious! You can see it here along with our guests’ reactions in the video below.”

“We also included a note on our invitations and on our wedding site to let guests know that we encouraged them to dress up to fit the theme in any way they wanted… And they DID! It was fantastic! I also want to thank Heather Goodwin, owner of An Inspired Affair, for being my advocate the day of our wedding. She helped me with all of the logistics while we planned and made sure I could have fun by knowing everything was taken care of on the day of.”

A Quirky Brazilian Wedding Planned in Just Two Months: Juliana & Tomas

May 24, 2012

Organised in just two months, Juliana & Tomas’ wedding was held in Brazil on the very date that they first met. The bride explains, “Tomas & I met two years ago through a mutual friend. At that time, Tomas lived in New York and I lived in Sao Paulo. In December 2009, Tomas went to Brazil to work and our friend invited him to spend New Year’s Eve in a house I’d rented at the beach. We spent 6 days together and, two months later, we met again, but this time in New York. We started a long-distance relationship, which lasted just 4 months, because I decided to come to New York. My plan was to spend a season in New York, study and invest in our relationship. Back then, we were very uncertain about our relationship’s future, but now we have no doubt we made the best decision.”

“At the end of October 2011, he proposed me and the only thing that we were sure at that time was that we would get married in Brazil in the same date that we met. The tough part – we had less than two months to organize our wedding. We wanted a small wedding, just the closest friends and our family, but Tomas also wanted a ‘wedding that didn’t look like a wedding’. We wanted a party with our touch, our style.”

“So in order to do that we made as much as possible ourselves. We did our own wedding invitations, we painted jars, and we took care of every small detail of the party. We flew from New York to Rio de Janeiro with two bags full of decor items. We really wanted something different and unique, a non-standard wedding. We spent the morning before our wedding together at the hotel’s swimming pool, we helped each other get dressed, and we got dressed in the same room, where some friends stopped by for a pre-party.”

Juliana wore a Cymbeline wedding dress with a striking red headpiece and carried a homemade bouquet created out of felt hearts. “My dress added a dash of fun style and my bouquet and the wedding cake were also unusual. The ceremony was performed by our mutual friend, our parents and siblings. Chef Damien was in charge of a vegetarian menu. We left a Polaroid camera available to our friends and some of the most memorable pics were taken with the photo booth props. If you asked me what I would change in the wedding, I would say ‘nothing, it was a perfect party!'”
